    Just wondering if anyone knows the answer to this...

    By law as a father im entitled to take 18 weeks unpaid leave to look after my child. Are weeks taken logged anywhere?.
    Say for example i took 18 weeks from one job and then moved jobs, would they know how much ive taken in previous employments?

    The Minister for Social Protection has introduced Regulations to ensure preservation of social insurance (PRSI) records for employees who take parental leave. Your employer must write to the Records Update Section of Department of Social Protection (DSP), detailing the weeks you have not worked, so that you can get credited PRSI contributions for this time (see 'Where to apply' below). You can find information about credited contributions and parental leave on the DSP website.
    Taken from here so yes there would be records of it and it would throw up a mismatch most likely (what happens after that is anyone's guess).

    You are only entitled (as in the employer has to say yes) to take 18 weeks.

    But if your employer agrees, you are allowed to take as many unpaid weeks as you want.

    The catch is that you will only get pension / PRSI credits (aka stamps) for 18 of those weeks. So if you took more, then went back to work but became unemployed a year or two later (depending on the timing) you may not have enough credits in the relevant-tax-year to qualify for a benefit.

    Why don't you just start the new job later?

    I'm curious as to this as well. I took some in my last job, but at a rate of just 1 day a week so it wouldn't affect my PRSI stamps paid. I don't think my old employer even kept track of my days used (although I did) but I wondered how a new employer would ever knw how much I'd used up already.

    I'm wondering about the 18 weeks per child. Can each parent apply for 18 weeks each or is is just a total of 18 weeks to be shared among the parents if both are working? Thanks
