Number of Years of Job Expierence

Hello, just looking to get people's opinions on something.

If someone has done a 1 year work placement as part of their college course and has worked in a job they are degree qualified in for a year and a half since leaving college would they be considered as having 2 and half years experience in that industry?

I understand that different companies might consider it as 2.5 years experience and other companies may view only the post college experience as applicable when applying for a job.

Just interested in peoples views on this as alot of jobs advertise looking for someone with 2+ or 3+ years experience.

I would imagine that it could be considered 2 years industry experience. But only 1 year post graduate experience. Depends on the wording of what they ask for.

Its 2.5 years experience and don`t let anybody tell you otherwise.

Of course your postgrad work experience was probably a bit more productive.

From my perspective that's 2.5 years of experience with your boots on the ground.

It depends what you were doing during that time. In reality, it could be one month's experience, 30 times over, if you never moved off doing the most basic entry-level tasks.

But if your work placement was full-time, then I'd say you're justified in claiming it's 2.5 years experience.

And even if a job advertises for a little more experience than you've got, apply anyway. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

    Couldn't disagree more.

OP, it's up to YOU how you sell yourself. You can spin your industry experience in any number of ways that make it a better fit with the role you are now applying for.

I would definitely be counting it as 2.5 years in total. Best of luck.

If you think you are a good fit for the job, then apply anyway, don't get stuck on semantics.
