Heat Guns

I have a few phones with cracked screens etc and I'm looking to repair them. I was quoted 60 euro to replace the glass on a Galaxy S3. I can buy the screen glass for 7 euro and fix it myself with some simple tools and a heat gun.

Now here is my query, I have to heat the glass to 70-80 C to melt the glue. If I go too high I risk breaking the LCD.

Can someone point me toward a good heat gun that allows me to control the temp at this level? Or alternatively a heat gun and infared thermometer combo.. and how exactly do I use those too together? Do I just point the thermometer in the direction of the heat ?

You can get heatplates that you put the phone face down on. You set the temp of the plate and leave the phone on it so the phone never gets hotter than that. Not sure where you would get them though (they're used in industry for this particular job). And id say theyre expensive.

However .... having replaced a few myself... all you want to do is heat it up a bit so its easier to get the screen and the glue off....ive used a few different methods. Hair dryer - about 6 or 7 minutes moving it around alot. Ive also used a pot on an electric hob. Heat it up so you can just about keep touching it with your fingers. Then i just switched it off and left the phone on it for a couple of minutes... that particular time the glass came off in a few more pieces than i would have liked so i might have been better off leaving it on a bit longer.

If youve loads of phones you might justify the cost of one of these fancy dan plates... If i was you id just use a pot or hairdryer.

Hair dryer (full heat ) will suffice. I'd be steering clear of the "heat the pot" method myself.
