Insurance prices going up?

My insurance is up for renewal at the end of the month and NoNonsense sent me my renewal quote. It's up from just under €1k to over €1,200. I'm 21, 3 years NCB, never made a claim, 1.4 1999 Astra. Rang around and was quoted anywhere from €1,200-€1,500 and FBD wouldn't quote me at all because the car is more than 12 years old.

Anybody else noticed an upward trend in premiums?

Is your car high risk that can be robbed with a tooth pick?

No Nonsense and FBD are the same company. Try them all is really the only advice I can give.

Speaking with someone in the insurance industry yesterday and they were telling me that prices were going up all across the board and to shop around and haggle as much as possible.

Try ARB Underwriters LTD see what they quote you. Or go through Chill insurance broker.

Yep and I think FBD profits were down for 2014 due to more claims so they're gonna try and increase premiums this year.

Car is in perfect condition with just under 110k miles on the clock. Not likely to be robbed I'd say!

Fairly bizarre so that NoNonsense will insure it but FBD won't? Suppose NoNonsense is probably aimed at younger people like myself. FBD probably don't want anything to do with me.

I'll continue shopping around anyway but you'd just expect the premium to go down even slightly in my position. Ah well.

Renewals also can be higher in order to allow room for some haggling. They also chance their arm in the hope that people are lazy and don't shop around for more competitive quotes.

Yeah, probably age comes into play as well. Again, I find AA (broker, my insurance is actually with AXA) to be reasonable. Try a few, most companies do charge a lot for older cars; you know, they are much higher risk because of all the things that fail on them. Now, if there was a mandatory regular test for them, that removed the unsafe ones from the road and made sure the others are up to certain standards, there would be no need for the overcharge. Oh wait... :D

If you were 4 years older you could get a limited mileage classic car policy as your car is over 15 years old. Sorry i no its no help to you but maybe someone else.

I checked with my insurer what my insurance premium was going to be like a month prior to it running out. €750, grand, down €200 from last year.
When it expired I tried another online quote, they wanted €1,200.

No penalty points or claims. It baffles the mind.

I have never seen insurance "going down" within the motor industry. Its on the rise all the time.

Afaik, you still need a regular, daily driver insured before having a classic policy.

Thats not really bad. Consider that the €50 extra was only to cover a couple of months left on the policy and maybe an admin fee, €425 compared to the €238tpft price is reasonable no matter what.

I was shopping around a bit in the last few weeks, and I noticed its the insurers who aimed for the no frills insurance sector (Liberty, FBD etc) that have risen. I wonder did it come back to bite them with so much risk on the books?

My insurance is with fbd and the renewal just came in the other day. It's gone from €600 to €750 despite not having any claims during the year. Not impressed, I'll ring fbd and look for an explanation, before ringing around to all other companies. Different voice, different quote right?

Had a quote with nononsense in Nov 434€, renewal in Jan for 575, same on their website. So it increased in the last 2 months. Went with AIG through quoteline.ie for 423, not including breakdown assist.

    I recently had to renew my own premium, which was €200 more expensive than the year before with nothing to suggest why i.e. no penalty points or claims. I queried this heavily with my insurer and the final conversation went like this;

Me: ...but I have maximum NCB and own a full licence over 10 years...

Insurer: There has been an increase all across the board with every company and this has been applied recently.

Me: Alright, so €740 is the very best you can do? If so, I will have to shop around before renewing, €200 is too much of a hike and you haven't really explained to me why.

Insurer: You're welcome to shop around but I know you'll find our rates among the most competitive. Motor insurance premiums were too low for years and this was unsustainable, the rise to combat this is what the customer is seeing now.

Me: It's just i've been paying insurance for years, I thought one of the benefits of being the farside of 30 was cheaper car insurance.

Insurer: I will also suggest that because your car is over 10 years old, this can push up the premium.

Me: But it's the same car that was on last year's policy*. Alright, thanks for your time, I'll let you know.

*Retrospect is a great thing. I don't know why the N.C.T. system didn't come to mind here. Does the fact that insurance companies are loading the premiums on 10+ year old cars not completely undermine the N.C.T? Anyway, I'm sure that had I remembered to raise the point at the relevent time, the insurer would have had another brush-off style answer ready for me. I wasn't getting any better than the quoted price, and that was that.
As it turns out, he was right in terms of competitive rates. The nearest price from another company I could find online was still €50 dearer than what my own insurer quoted me, and was a no-frills sort of policy.

Unfortunately I hadn't the time to go to a broker and see if it proved a cheaper means to get insured, so I renewed with my current insurer for the sake of staying on the road. Next year for renewel I will definitely go the broker route. I never had to before, I always found my insurance reasonably enough priced dealing directly with insurers. However this 'everyone's doing it so that's why' price raise caught me offguard and I will have to do a bit more than just search online and try to haggle with my insurer next time.

TL:DR; Insurance has gone up "across the board" it seems, Bruce Hornsby...That's just the way it is. Also if you have a 10+ year old car, which still passed the same N.C.T. testing as that of a 2010 Porsche, your premium will be loaded.

    Yeah up accross the board.

I'm onto my fourth year of insurance, three on my own policy. My first policy was €720. Third party fire and theft, 23 years of age, provisional driver, male.

Year after the general figure was €1500-2000 but was able to secure a policy for €1000, year after a little more was the best on offer.

Renewal this year came in the door from Allianz at €1300. Same policy, another years no claims, still provisional, but they added some nice features to the policy. (Insured abroad, insured to drive another car in Ireland etc)

Ringing around the quotes ranged from €1900-2400. funny was a few insurers saying I was bluffing them saying my existing policies insured me on my own, as that was illegal because of my provisional. Didn't bother even entertaining the conversations as I knew plenty of insurers are happy to do it.

Stuck with allianz, for €1300 for the year. 00 Opel Astra 1.4L. Three years no claims. Oddly it seems to go up every year even though I'm older and having no claims. Really need to get the finger out and get my test done.

Worth factoring in the cause for these rises, is the insurance levy required by the Quinn collapse, and also insurers covering the balances from not being able to openly provide female drivers massive discounts. Have to laugh when I still see people from Cavan banging on about how great Quinn and the gang are, it's cool, we will pick up the tab for the next 20 years : /

I know insurance is going up but i have to smile at young drivers now.
I started driving around 15 years ago. got named on the parents policy , passed test, got 2 years experience. My first insurance was TPFT on a 1.0 suzuki swift cost 2500 pounds or 3200 euro.
If that was now i would get it for half or less .
I know a few 21/22 year olds who are pissed off at having to pay 800/900 euros. which i think is great value
after 11 years no claims im looking at 450/500 but on a 2.0 audi
