Greatest waste of money in Irish history , just telling the average citizen what most already knew (wink wink) - in a society where our health service is in dire need of funding , where there our homeless on our streets - apart from making a small golden circle of legal eagles obscene amounts of money - what did these expensive never-ending tribunals actually achieve ??

the state covering Ray Burkes legal bills is a farce, that would not be tolerated in most modern country's.

I agree completely, although RB's legal fees are small buns when compared to the cost of some of the tribunals....

from the top of my head, the Travers Report (between legal fees and refundable fees) cost approx €500 million.

*without using Google, can anyone remember what the Travers Report was about?

Our health service is well enough funded compared to most countries, the funds are just spent poorly. There's a bed provided to any homeless person who wants one.

I agree with you regarding the legal eagles small golden circle getting obscene amounts of money.

This (the idea that the Tribunals were a waste of money) is an extremely common myth, probably perpetuated to try and bash the idea of having tribunals, so that corrupt politicians, businessman etc., do not have to face investigations/questioning/scrutiny/accountability.

Have a read of Elaine Byrne's book about Irish political corruption - in it she points out that (as she repeated on twitter):
At most, the tribunals cost the state €500m. BUT they brought €1Billion into the exchequer through fines/taxes.
    https://twitter.com/elainebyrne/status/546629591792906241

The Tribunals were a net benefit to the states coffers - not to mention dissuading future corruption (despite being imperfect), and shedding some light on corruption within politics/business.

Would have been worth every penny had Bertie finally been bought to justice and served time.

Disgrace that they were cut short.

Also Ray Burke went to jail, so that's a concrete result right there.
