Want To Learn Banjo - Some Advice Please

    Hi,

I have been playing acoustic guitar for in excess of 20 years and am keen to venture out a little.

As I am country music / bluegrass / traditional fan, I would like to learn to play the banjo.

Can anyone advise what to look for in a new banjo? What manufacturers I should lean toward? I gather that a tone ring is important... Any other advise?

    My budget is approx €600.

    Cheers

Maybe I'm really stating the obvious here, but if you want to play bluegrass/old-time stuff you are going to want a 5-string banjo, but if you want to play Irish trad (jigs and reels and whatnot) then it's a 4-string (AKA tenor) banjo that you'll need. Unfortunately I'm not much of a banjo player at all so can't give you any more useful advice than that regarding makers etc.
