Work photo competition

    Hi all,

Hopefully the right place for this question. We have a photography competition going on in work at the minute and I know nothing about photography. However, the other morning I got an amazing snow scene snap on my phone (iPhone 5) and was hoping to submit it.

The specs for submissions is 300 dpi and file size >2MB but <3MB. So the file was 72 dpi so I changed this to 300 dpi using photoshop and an online guide. However, from reading online this dpi thing is meaningless anyway (I just want to have the spec right). The file size is around 2.2MB so happy days.

My question is, this is still just a pic taken from a phone camera and does show some pixelation when enlarged, am I mad submitting it or should I give it a go? Not sure if the quality is way too low!

The best camera in the world is the one you have in your hand at the time. Just submit your photo and don't worry about it.

Exactly this. Go for it and good luck!

The 300dpi would be so that the photograph could be printed and possibly used in the future by the company - details of that would be in the terms and conditions I'm sure. 72dpi is fine for web etc. but would break down pretty quickly when you try to print at any large size.

dpi = dots per inch. You have the dots/pixels and they have the inches, but how many..?

    The iPhone5 has a max photo resolution of 3,264 pixels x 2,448 pixels, giving a print size 10.88 inches x 8.16 inches @ 300dpi.

The spec of DPI in this context shows that the person setting the rules has less of an idea about photography than you do.

What they should have given is a size in pixels (max and min) and a file size. The DPI determines how large you can then print that file

eg. If a file is 1200 by 900 pixels then at 300 dpi it would print to 4" x 3"

It's for hanging in our refurbished offices. Prize details says winners receive professionally mounted and printed copy of the picture (approx 20cm x 30cm) so I'm assuming this is the size that will be needed printed. Think I'll throw it in anyway and see what happens!

    Close enough I'd say.
