Accessing funds while travelling

I hope this is the right spot for this. Am heading off for 4 months to NZ and Aus, with stops in Hong Kong and Dubai on route, and hopefully a few weeks in eastern Europe before I go. Just wondering what is the best (cheapest!) way to get at my cash while away. I have a debit card, but someone told me once about 'putting money onto your credit card' and that you don't get charged to withdraw/spend it. Don't know how true this is. The brother is away in South America, and he has an account with a UK bank (he works over there), which he pays a quarterly fee on, but gets transaction free banking worldwide, anything similar available here? Thanks.

An issue with pre-loading your credit card is that if it's stolen, the money in credit is not refunded as far as i'm aware. I'd just use the debit card, your best bet first of all is asking your bank about their charges. Also remember to advise your bank of your travel plans, listing which countries you plan to be in and when, as they sometimes block cards if they don't know that you're there.

Also, do carry some emergency cash with you, we were in a remote part of Panama and for some reason the local ATM wouldn't work for us, it was fine everywhere else in Panama. We were just lucky the hotel owners "over-charged" us on the hotel and gave us the cash back.
