Dress alterations in short time frame

Has anyone here got all of their dress alterations done in a very short space of time (say, a week?). I'm in Canada and my dress is in Ireland. I'm torn between getting it shipped over, fitted here and bringing it back on the plane with me, or leaving it in Ireland and just trying to get one fitting done a week before the wedding.

It'll need to be taken up, bustled and (hopefully) taken in about a dress size. It's a ball gown so there's quite a bit of material to play with, but it's not overly complicated as it's mostly tulle. Am I mad to consider leaving it? I'm not sure which option would prove less stressful!

could you book it in now for the day you cine back? sounds like alterations could be done in a day or two. Would be worth calling a seamstress here to check the time frame.

I agree with annoyedgal. A phonecall or two to some local alteration places (in Ireland) would give you a good idea of what to expect and what's possible in that timeframe. It sounds like the type of job you would need to 'book in', to make sure the seamstress is expecting your dress and has made time for the alterations.

I had fairly simple alterations done on my dress here in the US - lifted at the shoulders, shortened and bustled - and this still required an initial fitting, another fitting after the length and shoulders had been adjusted to have the bustle pinned, and then a final fitting on the day I collected it.

Thanks ladies! The shop I bought it in also does alterations so I'll try to get in touch with them. The time difference is a killer! I wonder if I could ask a bridesmaid to phone them...

Just in case anyone else is in a similar situation: The seamstresses at the store where I bought my dress have said they can do the alterations in a week, as long as the dress is booked in and they have enough notice. Apparently, it's pretty common that brides come back from overseas and need alterations done in a short time frame. They'll have a week to do mine so hopefully it'll all work out well.
