Forcefully moved windscreen wipers

    Hi

My (00 Corolla) wipers would not work this morning and was told by a friend that the base might be frozen from the icy weather we had so i gave them a bit of a wiggle thinking i could free them.

This didnt work so i then checked the fuse box and the wiper fuse had blown, replaced the fuse and now the (what i believe ) wiper motor is running but the wiper blades are not moving.

Any idea if i did major damage and is it a diy job to fix.

The rear wiper worked grand again after i replaced the fuse btw

    Thanks in advance
    John

Check the wiper linkage to see if anything came loose while you were shaking them. Could be as simple as tightening the nuts holding the wiper assembly to t the linkage

Is the linkage the part where the wiper blade connects to the car.

    Watched a youtube video,took screenshots.

Could i have rounded or sheared the area shown in the pics (where wiper attaches)

As i said i can hear the motor running since i changed the blown fuse.

    Thanks

The nuts in the screen shot are the first thing is check. They could be rung but if the nuts are loose the teeth won't engage.

I'd they're tight check the linkage. Should be behind the shuttle panel. They are a series of bars attached to the motor to change the circular motion of the motor to linear motion at the wiper. Something could be loose here

If you can hear the motor running, there are 2 points of failure you should check.
[1] Splined shaft at the base of the external wiper, held on by a nut, this is on the exterior of the car.
[2] joint between motor arm and linkage to wipers. Often a push-on ball joint, may have a clip to secure it. If this becomes disconnected, the wipers will be floppy and move freely by hand from the outside.

This seems to me as the most likely problem, i can hear the motor and also parts moving inside the cavity under the plastic cowl.

Its too dark and wet to do an inexperienced diy job so prob have to get mechanic to look at it.

Any idea of time and labour, part costs if it is a worse case scenario and needs new linkage etc..

    Thanks
    Cheers

Is it the 5 door lift back model? If so it's more than likely the linkage. If it's the saloon, estate, or 3dr hatchback the chances are very slim that the linkage is worn.

Got it fixed today, linkage had snapped.

They used a screw to hold it place, new parts would off been few hundred they said

    50 euro all in,

    Thanks for the replies
