Hi folks I will be in the market for a mid sized family car-prob petrol, as the mileage is between 8 and 10k per annum-commuting mileage only budget is 10-12k, and am looking for the newest I can afford. Performance isnt really important as its only for the school run and commute to work. Enough space for 2 adults and 2 kids. I am coming from a 05 1.8l petrol Mondeo, which has served me well, but am looking for a newer car with a smaller engine size as the tax is killing me....

    Cheers,

To get a similar class of car your options will be limited enough. Diesel has taken over and won't suit your type of driving. A Passat 1.4tsi maybe is probably the best petrol option available with low motor tax.

If you didn't mind dropping to a slightly smaller car you would have more options. They might feel like a step down in some ways compared to what you're used to.

In addition to the Passat, you could probably bring in a 2011 1.6 eco boost Mondeo zetec for about 13k or a same year 1.4tsi octavia se for a grand or two less from the UK/NI, neither model appears to exist in Ireland unfortunately.

The Octavia would be a definite step down, if anything it night be worth checking out a Superb 1.4 or 1.8tsi.

Wouldn't disagree, just throwing it out there as a budget friendly reasonably new option, although at the same time it would be grand for 2 adults and 2 kids around town. Forgot about the Suburb another decent option.

Actually just noticed the POA on the Passat above, don't tell Al I said anything but I am certain I saw that car listed before christmas with a 13k asking price in case the OP is interested in a ballpark figure for it ;)

If I was in your position I would be looking at Honda Civics.

Would you even get an Ecoboost Focus cleared for €12k or less?
