    Hi All,

My question to you: why after registering as married couple, tax office sent tax certificate without transfering may tax credits ( 63.47) to my husband?

We went in tax office in august 2014, after we got married, and explained them that i earn less than 10000 euros/ year, and asked them to transfer my tax credits to my husband.
In the tax certificate received in january 2015 shows that they didn`t transfered any PAYE tax credits, we have each 63.47 weekly.....but they raised his tax rate band to 42,800 which is fine. Which means they partially changed things we`ve asked.
Co-workers at the company where i work, they all have their weekly tax credits transfered to their husband.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Did you fill in the form to transfer everything over?

We went in after got the marriage cert. and talked to a lady, she checked our p60 from last years, and she asked what way we want to be assesed. So she changed in computer the things, and said that from 2015 january will apply the changes. But on the tax cert. received is just half of the things are transfered. So tax rate band is increased for my husband, but the PAYE tax credits are equally divided...

So fill in the form to transfer all your tax credits to your husband, send it to them before the end of March and they'll update his tax credits.

    Can I jump in here?
Bee06, i got married last June. Both working full time. I earn slightly more than husband (I'm public, he's private sector). I thought it was just automatic that you altered tax credits after marrying but my mam said herself and my dad never changed tax arrangements after they married 35 years ago (they were both public sector).
Is there anyone I could speak to that would clarify things for me? Accountant maybe?

(I cannot tell you how clueless I am about this kind of thing so no real point in me looking into it myself.)

I won't claim to be a tax expert but I've been looking into it myself because I got married last year myself. Whether or not it's worth being jointly assessed or not depends on your wages. If you are both paying tax at the higher rate then it makes no difference if you are jointly assessed or not. Is there someone in your payroll or your husbands payroll you could talk to maybe they could help? It's reasonably straight forward so paying an accountant wouldn't be worth it I would say.

It's the assessable spouse election form. I downloaded it from revenue.ie.

I know I am paying higher rate but not sure about his. I'll get him to ask his boss. So if he is on lower rate then it obv makes sense to transfer his credits to me?

He should be able to see if he's paying the higher rate of tax from his pay slips.

There are two things you can transfer/split:
Firstly the tax credits - if he's paying tax he's using all his tax credits already so not really much point in changing the split.

Secondly the standard rate tax band: a married couple have a standard rate cut off of a max of 67,600 (it depends on how much you both earn). You can allocate that however you want. Here's a link that can probably explain it better than me.

Right I have a bit of homework to do so.
He doesn't get a slip. Just paid nett amount directly into bank. His boss pays tax (well not really pays tax if ya know what I mean but all we see is the nett amount in account weekly)
    I'll investigate more so. Thanks

The PAY E tax credit is not transferable.

How much exactly do you earn. The standard single credit of 1650 and paye 1650 allow you to earn 16500 euro without paying paye. If you earn more than this, there is no point transfering your credits.
