Airbag light on in Avensis

hi folks, bangernomics motoring all going well in the 01' Avensis apart from nct date looming and airbag light after coming on in the dash about a month back. At first it was staying on constant and flashing, now it seems to be staying on constant.

Could anyone tell me howI might go about rectifying this if it is a DIY job. One guy told me it was a main dealer only job to rectify but I'm not going to take his word alone on that. If I wanted to do a few checks myself where might I be best placed to start?

    Thanks

Disconnect the battery then start with the airbag connection under the drivers seat. Spray some contact spray then refit. A fault code read is a must to properly diagnose it though. And of course you could always take out the clocks and remove the airbag bulb before NCT? ;):D

And it will then certainly fail as it will be not on when the ignition is turned on.

Reading through previous NCT related threads chances are that they'd miss it...and I was joking I do think about them children worry not, surely an airbag fault would jeopardize safety anyway. :P

Greyfoot thanks but not a wire to be found under the either passenger seat or drivers seat in the Avensis. Dont know maybe they are burried under the carpet but such is not apparent to me.

brother got me a universal fault code reader for Christmas. Haven't used it yet but beleive it wont do airbags

Yeah first of all no connections under Avensis seats, first think to do is flash a fault code out, tester not needed, just bridge pin 4-13 of the diagnostic plug to begin the flash procedure then tell me how many times the airbag light flashes, eg a code-13 flashes like- 1 flash, pause then 3 more flashes then long pause.

Thanks PADRAIC.M. I heard of connecting pins on Vectra before with a paper clip for diagnosing. never did it mind. I will try what you say tomorrow and if you could let me know what the problem is after I report back my results to you I would be most appreciative. To check in with you PADRAIC.M. will it always be a 2 digit number or could there be more than 2 digits?

    Thanks again

No always 2 digit but there could be more than 1 code stored

PADRAIC.M Just bridged them pins there. Got a '31' followed a '72'. Hopefully you might be able to provide me with a possible issue(s) from these, thanks in advance

Details of the codes are below. Sorry for the formatting as a result of the cut and paste but you'll get the gist. There is no 72 listed, sure it's not 71?

31 is Vacuum sensor signal and 71 would be EGR Vacuum Feedback Management - possibly related.

Avns1s thanks for your response but it was the airbag light as opposed to the engine light I got them sequence of flashes through.

Presumably your codes relate to engine management light??

i think low voltage is the only thing that will allow the airbag light illuminate and subsequently go back off of its own accord.

how old is you battery? check the condition of the alternator and associated alternator and battery connections. have you any heavy electrical loads in the car?

do you have a multimeter you could do a few basic checks with?

Well code 31 is an internal fault in the airbag ecu which might clear easily but code 72 is a fault for a short in Left hand front pretensioner. Basically you will need to probably change lhf seat belt reel (not RECIEVER) there is a test you can do with a resistor where you plug it in instead of the pretensioner with a resistor of same resistance but I wouldn't recommend this as a day job really...

Thanks PADRAIC. I can should be able to get that part from a local scrappy and change it handy enough over the next few weeks. Wont be done immediately but will let you know how I get on. Appreciated;)
