on 27th Dec, I bit the bullet and bought a Oneplus One. I wanted in on the app action and I was sick of no new flagships for WP. The OPO arrived yesterday and I spent all day getting it configured etc. until I had everything I wanted. Then I tried out the camera .

This morning I started the Amazon returns process. I have to take a 15% restocking hit, but fugg it, having all the apps in the world does not make up for a sh1tty camera...

Sounds familiar. In a moment of madness I thought I might get a Sony xperia z3. Again everything looked good on paper, and it even had a dedicated camera button, but then I looked into the camera in more detail and realised it's barely an improvement over my 920, and in some scenarios actually worse.

I'm still hanging on for the htc m9 windows phone edition. Hope its a real device with a camera button and good image quality!

if the camera is that important to you, then get the 1020. nothing else beats it, and lowlight performance is excellent. And you can now get it for about 350 euro!

I hope the Denim update is as good as promised wrt Lumia camera performance.

Although I would never leave WP at this point (loving the general MS ecosystem with Xbox, MS Band, Surface etc. too much), I feel your pain - I really want the next few months to yield a Lumia 1030 (or maybe 1040, who knows where the numbering will go with W10) announcement, mine is old and starting to get really sluggish at times. Gimme a new model that's slightly thinner and lighter, and has a faster processor, maybe better battery life, that's literally all I want.

Where would you get it for that price?

saw it on amazon.de for 349 (not sure about seller/postage etc)

if you know someone in the US, it's on the microsoft store for $349.

Unfortunately the Denim update won't be able to do miracles with the camera speed performance of the 1020. The CPU cannae handle it, it just doesn't have the power.

You're just left with undoubtedly one of the best point and shoot cameras out there, a bit slow to start and between shots, but still. For the current prices, it's very tempting.

EDIT: Link with more information from Paul Thurrot's WinSuperSite. Looks like it's the Dual Core CPU that's holding the 1020 back.

Of course, we can always dream of a 1040 being announced next week at the Microsoft event, eh? :)

AFAIK, the 808 had a dedicated processor to handle the large image processing from the big sensor. The 1020 doesn't.

I know that the older phones won't get any of the Denim goodies like 4k and HDR etc. , but I thought I read somewhere that the update would bring performance improvements to all handsets i.e. it will load more quickly.

    Its weird isnt it?

Here I am five miles from Microsoft HQ in Redmond. And I have a two and a half year old nokia920 that I'm eligible to replace for nominal free from my provider AT&T.

    But there's nothing.

    Wtf are MS thinking?

They promised something coming soon during their Windows 10 event.
With Mobile World Conference coming up in March, I'd say we might see something around then ... although Microsoft will probably do their own event rather than get lost in all the MWC chatter.

They're starting to go the same route as Apple - as we saw Microsoft not cover Windows 10 at CES, but use their own event afterwards. It makes sure they make the most of their press cycle.

Fingers crossed for something great. I'm still rocking a 920.

Got a little fed up myself over the weekend of the 1020's RAW-related camera crashes, and ordered a 930 from Amazon to tide me over until these new flagship handsets arrive, which doesn't look like it'll be until Windows 10 launch time (although they might be announced sooner).

930 just arrived today (very quick from Amazon!), loaded up Denim on it, very, very impressed!

    Very nice! :)
Waiting on an 930 to arrive aswell, upgrading from a 630. Did you just go into normal phone update setting to get Denim? Take long to upgrade?

Yep, the "country variant" 930s (ie the ones that were never locked to a network) from UK/Ireland are receiving Denim without any Dev Preview stuff required. I think mine came without Cyan though, so I had to update about 3 or 4 different times before Denim arrived. And the Camera app itself gets a different update iirc.

Camera is super fast though compared to my 1020 (although obviously I'll miss the unbeatable photo quality there), takes about 1 second to launch the camera from standby, and then shot-to-shot times seem to be fairly instantaneous. The 4K capture should be really useful too.

Just curious, did you cut your micro sim down to nano size yourself or transfer your number over to a new nano sim?

Crikey, hadn't realised it was nano SIM (been in the office all day on wifi, and haven't swapped the SIMs yet), I'll have to call into a 3 Store on the way home and get one. I think I have a cutter at home, but buried somewhere.

Well the new flagship will at least have the latest Snapdragon 810 in it: http://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft-set-qualcomm-snapdragon-810-powered-lumia

Finally ran out of patience. After 8 years and 7 handsets, I have jumped ship (at the time of writing, it has only been 36 hours :D). I would be a pretty heavy user of xbox music and have suffered like everyone else as the app gets progressively worse. I snapped on Sunday, just about to go out for a run and, after yet another update, my music won't play. This is all music that is downloaded to the phone, so connectivity wasn't an issue.
Dropped into CPW yesterday and picked up an iphone 6. True to form, it just works. Including xbox music, which runs faster and better than it does on the Windows phone. It makes me a bit sad, but I've been pretty patient through all the promises and strategy u-turns. Now I just want something that just works.

I will miss the camera on the 1020 though...nothing will ever beat that I think...

Can't blame you on that one; what were your options really? The year-old 930 with good camera and faster processor but little else (still relatively big and heavy and also lacking glance), or a side-grade to a 830 with an inferior (relatively) camera? Assuming that a newer lumia model would actually work better with xbox music. Personally I've had no such issues on my own phone but most of my music listening is now via Plex.

I'm going to keep trucking with my 920 until it dies or until I spot a really good replacement. It should feel like an actual flagship upgrade with a market-leading camera, and if that comes in the form of the sony z4 with android then so be it. It already looks like the htc m9, even if eventually released in a windows phone variant, has only an average camera.

Had a similar experience on the low end. I like my low end Lumia. But there's a lot of things (and apps) that just don't work. Had to set up a iPhone 4 (the older single core one) for someone the other day. Everything I'm missing on the Lumia, works on that 5yr old iPhone.

I hope that Windows 10 is much better. If its not, I can see more WP users drifting away.

Which apps don't work properly on the low-end devices?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,648 ✭✭✭✭beauf

I didn't say they didn't work on low end devices specifically.

For example i couldn't get any app on wp to show later trains to plan my journey. Tried the same thing on Android and iPhone and I had no problem.

Looking at aawp on my wp it doesn't format properly making it unreadable for tables and comments. Works fine on the other os devices we have.

Journey Planner from the NTA is generally grand for trains, buses (Dublin Bus and Bus Eireann) and LUAS (in Dublin, obviously) - it also includes walking distance and taxi as options as well.

That said, for me, I'm still holding on to my Lumia 920 because it works grand and there has been nothing in the newer handsets to scream the need to upgrade to one of them. There's an awful lot of pressure on this incoming Flagship Windows 10 phone from Microsoft.
