Impact of 3 points on Insurance

My insurance renewal is due for renewal and unfortunately my wife has 3 points this year (got last Nov). It seems to have very significant impact on the premium which I'm surprised at....at least anecdotally I thought one set of points for speeding was not supposed to really impact on insurance cost but maybe that has changed since it moved from 2-point offence to 3-points.

Increases seem to be in the €100-€200 range (€180 for current insurer) which seems a lot to me and this is just my policy on which she is named so I assume her own policy will also increase by similar if not more even. So in total the 3 points will cost perhaps €300 extra per year for the next 3 years so total cost of one speeding offence is close to €1,000....seems disproportionate to me but maybe I just feel hard done by :-)

Anyway just wanted to check other people experience....are the days of getting one speeding offence and having no impact on your insurance behind us ??

My insurance company told me it would take 6 points or more to affect my insurance!

I wonder is it all just the way they word it...a lot of insurers now offer a discount for zero points but that means if you get any points at all you lose the discount....technically they are not charging you more but just not giving any discount :-) End result is it still costs more!

I would have assumed the points should have put my insurance up as Im only 21. I did declare them and followed up to make sure they were there. Either way Im not gonna complain. My insurer is Liberty for what its worth
