    Hi guys,

Technically this is a laptop question but more related to upgrading an existing machine.

    I currently have a Sony vaio vpcee2s1e 120gb SSD, 1tb HD and 8gb ram.

its showing its age at the moment and for what I use it for its lagging badly behind colleagues newer machines.
ideally I'd buy a new machine but the budget isn't there.

I've been looking at a CPU upgrade as the clock speed isnt great on my current one.
I have an AMD P820 at the moment.

looking at compatible chips for the socket I see the x940.
it has an extra core, higher clock speed and can take higher freq ram etc.

the only issue i can see is that the cooling on the laptop was designed for the P820 and the Thermal Design Power of 25W.

is running a 45W CPU going to cause issue with the other stock components?

    thanks

How hot does your current CPU get?

25 to 45 is a big jump, and unless the cooling solution is very good (which is doubtful) I don't think doubling the load on it would be a good idea.

A couple of things to check first before you even consider it

Is the cpu socketed or is it soldered to the board? If its soldered on i would imagine its a no go.

Was there a version of the laptop that came from sony with the x940? If not the bios is unlikely to support it, even if it fits the same socket.

I would say either of those make it a no go, regardless of cooling the extra 20W.

without taking it apart off hand i don't know if its socket or soldered.
from looking at images of the laptop model boards online it looks like a socket but cant be 100%

the board runs the AMD M880G Chipset which is compatible with the x940.
other manufacturers have this chipset and CPU combo.

so I think its just the heat and BIOS that's the only unknowns.

there are 35W CPUs with lower speeds in the same Phenom II family.
    thoughts on those?
