V.A.T on van from UK

Just wondering if i am V.A.T registered in Ireland and buy a van from the UK i pay 20% VAT on it there can i claim that back here? Somebody told me aswell that if I supply the garage where I buy the van in the UK with my Irish Vat number i dont have to pay the vat at all?
