    ^i joke.

but think we need more info. do you think it sounded like it was inside the car or in the engine? i have a corolla, so I'm assuming a lot when i suggest that they have same engine layout. i can't think of anything on the passenger side (of engine) that may cause that noise. on that side is the battery. the driver side however has all the finicky bits, like the belt, alternator, radiator (kinda)

You need to pop bonnet, and go to engine bay and listen.. Could be vacuum pump, servo etc etc.. I would suggest running engine open window, and turn off car from outside thus giving you that xtra couple of seconds with head in engine bay.

oddball car as toyota have rads in front of engine, now an old 92 mini has rad on left wing.

wonder are you hearing the air rushing through the plastic manifold,or is air filter cover not seated correctly.

Have you tried removing a cross wife?

Always seems to reduce hissing sound.

Passenger side has the fan behind the glovebox, is there a leak there that could make the sound?
Try turning off the fan and see if it stops the sound.
Adjust the air distribution from screen to footwell to face etc.
Aside from that is the window completely shut?

Was air conditioning on? Is it an Avensis with dual zone climate control where the passenger temp might have been the exact opposite of the temp the driver side was set to?
