    Hi,

Can anybody recommend good powerline adaptors, preferably better than fast ethernet and with wireless as well. Have a few blackspots in the house where there are Sky+ HD boxes and I would like to rectify this, will be using with 240mb UPC broadband.

    Thanks,

    R_N

Have multiple sets of these working together at home, 500Mbps best for you:

TP are top dog for homeplugs at the mo. Isnt much between them an others of the same standard (AV200, AV500 etc).

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TL-PA6030KIT-Powerline-Multiple-Configuration/dp/B00K3FEC4C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1421167831&sr=8-1&keywords=tp+link+homeplug+gigabit

Theres a 3x port version too if you need it, at increased cost.

You can all also get ones that have wireless built in which might come in handy at some stage.

After a set of these but they only have the set with the single ports in Naas. I want to connect a ps4 and sky box to it, is there a double adapter for Ethernet or would I need a switch?

Or you can get ones with several ethernet ports, such as this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Devolo-dLAN-500-Wireless-Starter/dp/B00A67I5EK

Not the cheapest but it also has WiFi, I'm sure there's some out there that are cheaper with multiple ethernet ports without the Wifi.

    single 4 port 500av adapter

What would be the best 'primary' unit to match with this?
(primary == the device that connects to the router)

based on the "frequently bought together" I would presume this

Thanks ...... but wondering about the specs given ......

    TPL-4052E
500Mbps networking over an existing connected electrical system featuring four (4) Gigabit 10/100/1000Mbps Auto-MDIX Ethernet Ports

    and

    TPL-406E
    1 x 10/100 Mbps Auto-MDIX Ethernet port

It seems the TPL-4052E would be constrained by the limitations of the TPL-406E.

I also noticed the TPL-4052E available from Dabs.ie but the spec given is 10/100 and not Gigabit.

    Bloody confusing .....

so im looking to wire up my ps4 and my laptop(only when downloading large files)

hows the wireless on them? will it be the exact same wireless speeds as if i was 3 feet from the modem?only wireless ones i can see are like 130 euro :\ i would prefare the cheapest option 2nd hand at like 60 euro max(long shot i know)

depends if you need a high speed home network or not?

If you just need these for internet access only then 100mb would be fine based on the speeds you quoted..

All depends on the quality of the home plugs and the quality of the wiring in your house. But in the real world home plugs only seem to deliver 50Mbs to 100Mbs maximum. I have the TP-Link TL-PA511KIT 500 Mbps Gigabit Powerline Adapters. They report a connection of 300Mbs between them, but I only ever see maximum 80Mbs. Usually average around 65-75Mbs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,499 ✭✭✭✭Alun

I get an average of around 150Mbit/s with my devolo 650+ adapters. The devolo cockpit app reports around 470Mbit/s.

I'm using a TP [500mbps] set of powerline adaptors...

Anyone get an issue of the connection through it randomly dropping once in awhile, even though the connection is still up off the router directly [such as off Wi-Fi] ?

Anyway of sorting that ? Gets annoying when on the Xbox watching Netflix >_<

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,833 ✭✭✭✭ThisRegard

I had similar problems. I could never be 100% sure what it is but I put it down to the xbox 360 itself as I rarely get it with my chromecast, internet radio or laptop. It still happens on occasion but with using Sky Go on the 360 it constantly happened, every 20 or 30 minutes or more. I'd have to plug out the adaptor and back in again to basically reboot it before it worked again.

Are you using a DNS to get the US netflix ?

They seem like good quality products but damn they are expensive. Quality of wiring has a big speed impact with any of this clobber imho.

    yep

nothing other than resetting the adaptors via the utility tool sorts that (well other than powering down altogether)

however I'd say it only happens once every couple of weeks to me

Thinking of getting a set of powerline adaptors to help boost the wifi access in a UPC connected house. Can someone more "techy" confirm that it's possible to connect a spare wireless router to the second plug, thus giving a second wireless broadband point (rather than having to connect to it via ethernet cable)? Is it difficult to do, any potential problems with UPC in particular? Will wireless devices roam seamlessly between the two routers if I put the same password on them? Thanks for any help!

You can do, but its probably redundant, just get homeplugs that have a WLAN AP built into the 2nd plug. Its a lot tidier.

Yeah I've heard of those but they seem to be outrageously expensive from what I've seen. Looking to cobble together something on the cheap.

If you want though yeah, you can add an AP onto an ethernet homeplug. Just need to configure it to "slave" to the router.

That TP-Link does 600Mb/s not 1,000Mb/s as claimed by the Sumvision.

    Stand corrected.

AV2 is where the industry is at right now. Thats 600Mbps. I'd be highly sceptical of that full gigabit claim. In any case effective rates tend to be closer to 200Mbps.

Gigabit is the new buzz word. They're also half duplex suffering the same limitations as wireless. Ok with a pair, but drastic slowdown with 3 passing traffic.

Well, gigabit ports make sense. Just not gig link speeds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,971 ✭✭✭_Whimsical_

    A stupid question probably but...

If I have these set up can I move the second homeplug around as I wish to different sockets? I mean the one that isn't connected to the modem.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,833 ✭✭✭✭ThisRegard

Yeah, there's limits such as it has to be on the same circuit but I reckon with your average house you shouldn't have a problem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,971 ✭✭✭_Whimsical_

    Thank you ThisRegard.

Turns out I don't have them setup properly. I followed all the instructions and pressed the relevent buttons as per the instructions. Now I can TP link in my list of wireless connections but when I try connecting to it the internet doesn't work and I get a "limited connectivity" message.
Any ideas on what I might be doing wrong or help with set up would be greatly appreciated.

Most likely the two HPs arent talking to each other. So the wifi gets you as far as the first homeplug, but you can go no further.

The 2nd light down is the DLAN light. If thats not on the homeplugs arent linked. Troubleshoot them by connecting them in the same room, then move the remote one to where you need it.

If I get UPC 120MB broadband installed with the modem in the living room - then connect my main computer in a different room via a 10/100Mbps ethernet port on a tplink TL-WPA281 homeplug - reading this thread am I right in saying the speed might fluctuate or even dip and that this setup wouldn't work?

    Cheers.
