    Hey Guys,

As the title suggests, can anyone recommend a good indy mechanic in town that can test emissions for the NCT?

Search yields old threads not 100% relevant.

    Thanks,

    Brian.

Has it failed the nct for emissions already.

Yea that and a few other easy to sort out things but I don't want to spend any money on it till I see what way the emissions go. If it's a cheap and cheerful solution I'll sort it out, if not I won't bother with the rest and take it off the road.

Who do you think is going to do a load of worth on your car, if you don't want to pay for it. Let the mechanic weed out what is wrong it the car/sell it/ or scrap it.

    What?

I want a mechanic who can test emissions to try solve the emissions problem. If he can do that for reasonable money that's great and I will do the rest of the work and get the car through the NCT.

If, however, the emissions problem is harder to diagnose and/or will cost a lot of money to solve, I do not want to proceed with all the other small jobs (rear drum shoes, cv joints, flexible brake hoses etc) if it's still going to fail on emissions. I could spend hundreds trying to pinpoint and resolve an emission problem.

Brian, Did you get the car serviced before bringing it to the nct. Unless its anything major normally a good service and a 70 mph trip from Carlow to Castledermott and back on the motorway will sort out the emissions.

Might help if you put up the readings.

Victor's garage on the Athy road gets recommended by some of the motor factors. Brian Cooney in Ballickmoyler also a decent shout.

Think they both test emissions but a quick call to either will tell you that. Both are reliable anyway.

Thanks, I didn't, will give that a whirl anyhoo but would like to have a mechanic test it before I spend money on all the other jobs to put it through NCT.

Obviously I meant any money aside from hooking up the emissions tester followed by maybe a fluid service or engine additive etc and see where we stand. ie if it's an o2 sensor or cat problem, it wouldn't be worth putting right.

    I don't have the sheet in front of me but off the top of my head it failed on;

    lambda 1.02
    co 0.48%
    Hc 256ppm

Thanks man, will give them a call. Tried two yesterday (a guy out the Hacketstown Road and another in Oak Park) but neither have the machine.

Edit: just got off the phone with Brian Cooney, based on the figures he suspects all of the above pretty much. The car has two lambda sensors and would require both. Also a new cat converter and exhaust so €600 ish just to sort out emissions! On top of another €150 ish to sort out back brakes and cv joint and that's if I do the work myself! This car is a write off unfortunately.

Anyone looking for VW Polo 6n parts?! ;)

What year is the car & how much you asking for it?
