Advice on attic insulation.

    Hi all,

About three years ago we converted our attic. The builder did a nice job (in the main) however he didn't insulate the storage space in the eaves. We've noticed that our house has become significantly colder over the past few years and now want to improve the insulation in the portions of the attic which don't have it.

We've had two quotes: One company suggest putting a spray foam on the un-insulated portion of the roof, another is suggesting ripping up the floor in the storage area, adding 300MM of Earthwool and then putting insulated floorboards down. Anyone have any thoughts on which is the better approach? We're not bothered about the coldness in the eaves themselves, but we do want to improve the heat in the rooms below.

    Thanks.

One thing I'll say is that make sure you have 300mm of a floor zone to put the Earthwool into. There's no point compacting 300mm earthwool into a 200mm space and putting floor boards onto it. I'd probably say the earthwool will give you a better U-Value overall.
