Consider first if you need a diesel, if your not doing the miles by a petrol, much bigger saving on initial purchase for your €5k.

Have had diesel for last 7 years so sticking with it! Where exactly would you find savings with petrol?

    Purchase price for a start.

    And in the long run?

    Servicing,

You really need to do the maths on it rather than believing Diesel is blanket cheaper for you.

    Those are the clear facts.

    Whats your weekly/annual mileage like?

You also have a better chance of finding a lower mileage petrol car within your budget. There is more to running costs than just saving a few cent on fuel.

hi there I bought my first diesel vw Passat last year having had a petrol for 8 yrs, while the petrol Toyota corolla did cost more on fuel on a week to week basis over the 8 yrs I had the car I spent no more than 400 euros on the car on parts and the car had 75000miles when I bought it and 260000miles when I traded it in.I have the Passat less than 10 months and its cost me 1000 euro so far and id say it will cost a lot more before I sell it on.ppl have you believe diesel are great yes they are if there bought brand new and sold on every three years but after those three years are up then comes the huge costs,,egr valves, dual mass flywheels, diesel particulate filter, high pressure fuel pumps, and all the other rubbish that all modern diesels have to keep emission's low.for 5000euro you wont by a good diesel you will by a wore out diesel that will cost a fortune to keep going, petrol cars are far simpler, easy to repair and for 5000euro you can get a low milage Toyota corolla prob up in the years.the only way a diesel will save you money is if it almost never fails in the time you have it but that's highly unlikely as diesels need driving and don't like short stop start journeys.if I was you stick with petrol,ok cost more at the pumps but there highly unlikely to break down and wont have huge repair bills.
