First try putting together a gaming PC for my son.
He plays mostly games from Steam.
We have a budget of €650
Would like to have included an SSD for the OS but it would be too expensive.
    Any help/comments much appreciated.Thanks.

    Any suggestions?
Would I maybe be better going with an AMD processor and using the money on a better graphics card?

Could easily shave 50 off that with a different case and PSU, a VS450 would be more than enough, case wise that's up to yourself of course. Build seems fine otherwise, tempting as it might be to put the extra 40 or 50 into a better graphics card - and that's also an option, like the r9 280 - but I would put in an SSD. Makes a huge difference. A 60GB one would be fine for the OS and other misc programs.

    Pretty good build imo

Would change one or two things though. The power supply is overkill,a decent 500w would have no problems running that system. If you got them seperaetly(from the case) it should save some money. Could also get slightly cheaper ram aswell. Should be able to pick up 8gb 1600MHz ram for about 60 with geizhals.

Have you run it through geizhals.de for discount? Should get you a few quid off

Im knit picking here but with making a few adjustments and using geizhals you may be able to squeeze in an ssd. Samsung 840 evo 120gb is €70 on hardwareverzand so your not a million miles away from it fitting budget, well worth it.

I think you'd get an r9 280 for not much more. They were 135 pound on Amazon till recently. Now 139 pound but still good value. Yeah, good 500W supply would do you too I reckon. The ssd isn't needed for gaming but it works wonders speeding up your os.

I also say to everyone shop around on Amazon for the best price. I just bought an MSI r9 290 gaming card for 240 including delivery from Amazon France. That is a saving of over 60 quid from almost anywhere else. It was under used like new from the Amazon warehouse but it actually was brand new with a damaged box. I registered it with msi for the full warranty. Just a thought.
