Do you travel cheap, or splurge out? Generally I travel cheap except on special occasions :)

Cheap generally, but I do it sensibly. I won't get a cheap hotel on the outskirts of the city I am visiting, if it means costly and time consuming trips to/from the centre of the city and main tourist attractions. I'll pay more to stay in a good location, but I won't stay in a super posh hotel when I'm there. Last trip I took was to San Francisco. We stayed in a fairly simple & cheapish Holiday Inn near Fishermans Wharf. We had the same things on our doorstep and the same conveniences as the people staying in the uber hip, boutique hotel up the street, but we probably paid a fraction of the price.

Depends on the reason for the trip ;) and who I'm travelling with.

Depends, being cheap isn't just about money, its about time as well.

E.G. I'll pay a bit more to rent a car, which saves me a lot of time farting around with public transport.

For me it's about the amount of trips I can go on (I love to travel and see new places) and how much I can do when I get there. So being frugal about certain things, like travel and hotel, will mean I'll be able to afford to do more.

I've done both. I flew with my mother business class to NZ, but then we mostly stayed in backpacker hostels once there. Absolutely worth the extra money to fly in business, mainly due to the 'extras' - the limo pickup, extra baggage allowance, airline lounges etc..

I got an upgrade to First Class on Emirates once. What an eye opener. While in some cases, the extra for business class can be worth it, the actual price of First Class wouldn't be worth it at all, imo.

I got that last week from Dubai to Dublin. It really is over the top. I'd agree that business class can be worth it for long haul but it would be impossible to justify first class.

It all comes down to your budget at the end of the day. If I'm a bit more flush at the time of travelling I might book the emergency exit seats on the flights for the extra room, a transfer from the destination airport to the hotel rather then navigating a possibly new transport system after a few hours in the air. That kind of thing.

With hotels definately location is key.. I'll happily spend what I need to on a nice hotel that is central and close to public transport like a metro or tram etc. no point in scrimping on a hotel if it's way out of the way and after a long day sightseeing in the city you have to take a train for an hour just to get back to a budget hotel with little or no eating options around you or comfort for that matter. It just all takes away from the experience. Again if you budget allows as mine has done go with the 4 star hotel you generally get what you pay for and all adds to the experience.

I tend to do it the other way round, I usually always fly economy and will book flights up to six months in advance to get the best deal. I don't mind a bit of uncomfort on a flight if it means having more to spend on accomodation/activities while I'm there.

All that said I'd say I tend to splurge when I'm in South America or Asia and scrimp when I'm in Europe or the US.

Cheap flights and hostels then spend a lot on food and drink and activities

9 times out of 10, I'll go cheap by getting the cheapest flights (particularly if my dates are flexible) and will stay in a dorm in a hostel. That said, I won't go for the cheapest hostel going, I'll pick something high rated so I've at least got some comfort and security and I'm in a good location to explore the city (the price will usually still be quite low).

After that I'll basically splurge on activities as well as food and drink although it's always a bonus if the hostel has a free or cheap breakfast!

Travel cheap and by doing that I can travel more. I fly to where the cheapest flights are going and on the dates that are cheapest. I don't use hostels though, usually a 2-3* hotel and sometimes if there is good deals i'd use a 5* like I did in Warsaw a year ago for 50e per night
