I am interested in learning how to do caligraphy. I have had a go, looked at YouTube videos etc. but feel I could benefit from one to one tuition or class lessons. Does anyone know of classes/tuition available? I live near Drogheda Co. Louth but would travel to Dublin or Meath.

The National Print Museum in Dublin run a one day calligraphy workshop a couple of times a year. The list of courses they're running for 2015 will be available at the end of January according to their website. I've been looking to do calligraphy but not many places teach it. I missed the Print Museum ones last year (they tend to fill up fast because they only have a small no. of places on each) so hoping to actually get to do it this year.

Thank you so much for that RosieP, I'll keep an eye out. Meanwhile I did a Google search today and found http://www.calligraphy.ie.
They have a Facebook page too. I sent off an enquiry re classes.

Thanks Zell, I'll email Calligraphy.ie as well, maybe we'll convince them there's big demand for courses :-)

With a decent book and basic equipment you can teach yourself calligraphy - it is mostly practise and getting used to holding and using the pens. You can learn the letter strokes and shapes, and get used to finding a rhythm, then you will be able to make much better use of a calligraphy class.

Attending classes would be better than watching tutorials on YouTube.

I would agree there, in fact trying to learn calligraphy from a video would be very difficult. But with an explanatory book you would be doing exactly what you would be taught in the basic calligraphy classes

I have never heard of Calligraphy Classes. A good book would show each stroke of the pen and the sequence of the strokes so after that its a matter of lots of practise.

I did a calligraphy class and enjoyed it, mostly because we were set challenges. However I still contend that you can learn all the basics from a decent book.
