Hi there, dunno if anyone can help me here. The tax is out on the jeep since last March, not worth selling it 00 reg. If I transfer to the wife, can I still insure it in my own name.??All answers appreciated, smart ones and all !

Could you not just be a named driver on her car?

Thing is I want to hang onto my own insurance if possible, no claims bonus etc. I just want to know if this can be done.

your no claims should stand for 2 years after your last expiry date

If the jeep wasn't declared off the road then I think the tax is still due on it even if you transfer it to your wife. The Loophole to retrospectively declare vehicles off the road has been closed.
An insurance company is unlikely to insure a vehicle which is not in your name. Likely the wife will need to insure it and name you as a driver. Although explicit in this is that you are not the primary driver of the vehicle.

Leaving aside your attempt to defraud the Revenue Commissioners, most insurance policies specifically define ownership in their terms and conditions. Some require the vehicle be registered to you, some do not.

The jeep has been of the road for the most part but not known that it would be, seems unfair to have to pay tax for it when not in use !

Seems unfairer that the rest of us paid our due motor taxes while you didn't :)

The tax authorities agree with you there. If the vehicle is off the road you declare it as such so the tax doesn't need to be paid.
You have to tell them up front though.

I argued on an earlier thread when posters were advising the op to sign the car to his wife and then back to him. Doing this would wipe the back tax, but also temporarily opens the driver up to a world of pain. Though the chances of anything negative happening are slim (having an accident while the car is in the wifes name) it is still a risk and could very well void the insurance.
