Corolla High consumption problems

    Hi,
I have a 2006 1.4 D-4D Toyota Corolla which is now down to about 35mpg from 55/60mpg when I got it 3 years ago. it is regularly serviced with toyota parts and castrol oil. it was serviced less than 10k km ago in the summer. I have also tried changing the filling stations I am going to but it is making no difference. Acceleration in starting to get poor again too.
Air filter is fine. Car idles fine. Check engine comes on every few months at random times but never shows up in diagnostics history when I get to a mechanic.
I have my own diagnostics unit on the way and toyota techstream running on my laptop.
Can anyone advise anything I can look at in the mean time as I really cannot keep pouring diesel into the car like this.
    Thanks

Have you been changing the fuel filter when servicing was it done recently ?

Have you had a look at the EGR valve since you got the car?

It has not been done at the last service but I think it was at the one before it. Should be within the schedule anyways.

On a side note. My mechanic uses Mann fuel filters when I let him do the service (he done the last fuel filter). He also uses other generic parts.
Would toyota/denso fuel filters be better?

Nope. Servicing goes as far as oil, air and pollen filters for me so far.
Im handy enough atdoing this kind of thing though. What should I be looking out for?

A load of soot in it.

I'd investigate the filter thing though.

Would be no harm to change it just to rule it out although if it's within its interval it's probably not going to be causing a 15mpg drop. But considering the cost of fuel filters Id personally change it just in case.

Check the wheels after a drive to see if one is warm. You could have a sticky caliper.

+1 on the fuel filter. These need to be changed every third-forth service.

A half blocked fuel filter will cause a decrease in power/economy.

And going by the amount of dirty diesel doing the rounds you could well get a blocked filter in no time.

Check all hoses around the engine, if any of them are split, that would be it.
I had the exact same symptoms on my cmax, including engine light. The hose from the turbo going into the inlet manifold had split after the intercooler, fuel consumption dropped into the 30's. Up to near 50 again after that. It took Ford a few goes to find the hole, a lot of the times the hole is in a bend, right by the c-clip, in a fold or somewhere out of sight.

    edit:
Recently the breather pipe came loose and that dropped my consumption by nearly 10 mpg, so make sure that all hoses going in and coming out of your engine are tight. Anything leaking from intake to turbo to intercooler and engine will have big impact on performance and MPG figures.
A lot of the time you won't see the split. You will have to follow the path the air takes and very closely examine all hoses, bend and flex them and check for kinks, tears and holes. And change the fuel filter while you're at it. But I don't see it make that big of a difference.

Thanks for all the advice guys gonna try this next week.

Am I best off using a Toyota fuel filter or can someone recommend something as good :)

For anyone else who views this thread here is a good guide on how to clean the egr valve on a 1ND-TV engine :)

Considering your trying to rule it out as the potential problem Id just a toyota they shouldn't be that expensive and at least you know it will be right.

You'll be lucky to get anything from diagnostics on a 06 Corolla. I had misfiring MAF and blocked EGR valve, and on both occasions, there was nothing in the logs

For the sake of what I paid I said it would be worth a shot.
Got the cable today and gonna test it out next week :)
