Tree Vandalised outside house

Now, i'm just repeating what i've heard from someone else, but I heard sometimes this can be done. It's just a chunk taken out of it, but it's been suggested that sometimes this is done to mark a house that's to be robbed. Anyone heard this before?

Go along the road and take a chunk out of every tree. That'll confuse them.

The robber was too busy, so he took a chunk out of the tree to let other robbers know. They're nice like that.

Never heard of that before but best to cut the tree down then the would-be thieves won't find your house anyway.

You're luckly, around me they'd rob the tree as well.

Houses are often marked with numbers and other distinguishing features. That's how your post gets there.

Better burn it. The house I mean. You can then laugh at them as there's nothing to rob.

Makes mental note never to buy a house with a tree outside.

Call the Gardai and ask them about it. It's the only place you'll get proper advice.

How do they mark houses without trees outside?

They plant them first, wait till they have grown to full size and then mark them. It's a generational occupation, burglary.

I wonder how long it took the other person to twig that! Or, maybe they are just barking up the wrong tree.

I heard it from a bloke who knows a guy who read somewhere that sometimes robbers hang a small cardboard cut-out of a Christmas tree off the mirror of a car they're going to rob.

If your house is the only house with a tree would they still mark it?

Suppose another gang also marked the tree.Do they each have individual marks and how do they come to agreement on such.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,592 ✭✭✭✭kneemos

Do they notch in a date underneath the mark so as not to get confused in the future?

I have a surprising number of questions about this.

Tree vandalism needs to be rooted out

What size chunk are we talking about here? Surely there are subtler ways than hacking at a tree with a saw

    Chalk marks

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

There's not a single 3 anywhere near any of my house or the neighbours. Concrete jungle is the arch enemy of today's thieves

Thought this was gonna be a thread about the classic drunken prank of moving someone's tree during the night and seeing so they notice the next day.

I'll have to keep an eye out for this practice in fuschia.

Surely any self-respecting burglar uses Google Street View to plan his crimes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,184 ✭✭✭riclad

I Thought burglars were on facebook, nowadays,
someone posts i,m on holidays in spain for 2 weeks,
    there house gets robbed.
maybe its not a good idea to post ,my house is empty for the next 2 weeks ,on fb.
SOME people are just morons, they damage trees ,
    planted by the council ,
    its like graffiti,or litter,
    its pure stupidity.
    nothing to do with burglary.
everyone under 30 seems to be on fb,
    this includes criminals,drug dealers etc

Theres no exam needed to join a social network.
    as posted above,
a burglar could get alot of info from fb,
rather than looking at a tree.

OP, you definitely don't know the feller who vandalised the tree?

Never heard that one before. I'd say it's not true, but I'm just going out on a limb here.

One I have heard is this - when you see a pair of runners hanging out of a power line it means that it's a regular drug deal location. I doubt it though. It probably just means some poor kid has had to hobble home shoeless.

I know that was definitely true about 10 years ago, i dont know if its still the practice.

I think that I shall never see,
a poem lovely as a tree,
for it will indicate to me,
    another opportunity,
    to commit a big burglary.

    (Yeats...possibly)
