    Hello,

I'm currently on jbs allowance and am going mad with boredom. I'm going back to college in September and will be applying for btea. If I do this and work part time in between does it affect the time I need to build up for qualifying for btea? As in if I work 20 hours a week part time Will it be deducted from the 234 days I need to qualify for the back to education allowance. Any information on this will be greatly appreciated!!

    Kind regards,
    Peter.

The best possible thing to do is actually ring the btea offices and they themselves will go through it all with you, went through similar and every situation is different but to me it was I'm some way means tested but they took into consideration my circumstances with rent and eat to.make sure you can live if you understand, they sometimes do deduct but again every situation.is different. Probably not the best answer you were looking.g for but there so helpful and lovely as my work hours was well over part time and they let it go due to circumstances and that. So again I'd highly recommend rigoing them to get exactly right how it will work out for you.
    Good luck

    Hi Peter,

I went through the same thing last year. I rang them up and worked out how many days I would need and I was able to work during the summer.

Basically you need to be on a social welfare payment for 234 days within a year before you start your course. (Sunday does not count as a day, so each week counts for 6 days).

You start college in September, so ring up and ask the BTEA crowd how many days you have been the dole since September 2014. (You should be close to half way there)

234 days will equate to about 9 months of the year, so you can only really work 3 months.
If you are working 20 hours, you will be on casual social welfare payments, maybe 2 days a week so that will all add up.

You need to contact BTEA and talk to them about it, but you definitely can work a bit, just not full time from now until college starts

Thanks to both of you for replying! I really appreciate you taking your time to comment :) I've been only on welfare payments since mid December so I must work out the days. I just hope it adds up, really need to get btea!! Hope your new year goes awesome guys, thanks again. :)

You never know, you might get a full time job in the interim, things are picking up, definitely at the minimum wage level. What part of the country are you in?
