Elf Premier Plus 10W/40 Semi synthetic oil for petrol and diesel engines.

Hi, gonna change my engine oil and was wondering if this oil is OK for a 01 1.4 VVTi Corolla? My garage used to put 10W/40 in it but I don't know if that was synthetic or semi synthetic etc.

Loads of places, including main dealers, or at least some main dealers use 10/40 semi synthetic in these. They seem to run away fine on the stuff. However the correct oil as is specified on the book is 5w30 fully synthetic.

    all my vvti's to this point (a couple of 1.4's, a 1.5 and a 1.6), i've ran on 5w30 fully synthetic.

my current one though (1.4, 150k miles), i've used 10w40 semi synthetic. done 6000 miles so far, pretty much 50/50 town/motorway and so far so good. hasn't even needed a top up.

My e12 corolla (1.4 vvti) gets 10w40, and in fact it's what comes up as recommended at the motor factors when searched for by reg

Halfords are still doing €15 for 4 litres of their own brand stuff.

The motor factors told me the same but the owners manual recommends 5w/30. I've not seen any problems with 10w/40 though tbh.

Nor me. I wonder did Toyota revise the oil type at some stage, like Ford

Does it matter that the engine oil has ACEA rating of A3/B3/B4?

I've a 00 corolla vvti and I use 10/40. Works grand for me, and my mechanic puts it in when he changing the filter

The book may recommend 5/30 but in 2001, that would have been perfect. The older the car, the thicker the oil should be (from my understanding), so thats why I think 10/40 is ideal for yours

Yes, it does. Read my previous post, what's recommended for your engine.

Halfords in Tralee have plenty of the 5w 40 on display, I have been popping in regularly over the last few days expecting to see the 10w 40 showing up, today I asked one of the staff why it was'nt appearing on display and he told me they were cleaned out by the local garages, he thought it was funny telling me how they took it by the box full :mad:. I'm sure that the local garages dont give much business normally to Halfords so I think that allowing this was poor form, they should have looking after their regular customers who are prepared for whatever reason to pay Halfords prices.

On a higher mileage VVTi, especially one of the earlier ones, it's probably better to go for 10W40, especially if that's what it's been using for the past while. 5W30 is the recommended oil for the ZZ-FE engines, but as it's thinner (than 10W40), and those engines are noted for oil burning, you're going to go through more of it as the miles pile on! That said, my parents have an 05 reg VVTi which has always used 5W30 and although it's burning oil, it's only a litre every 4,000-5,000 miles (there's about 162,000 miles on the clock now), so unless it starts guzzling the stuff, it's going to stay on 5W30. I'd rather keep it on the oil it's supposed to use for as long as is feasible, but that's just me.

I'd always pay the extra for fully synthetic, though - it's hardly any dearer than semi-synthetic but it's much, much better for the engine as it does a better job of protecting the engine when it's cold than semi-synthetic does. There's no need to something very expensive and fancy into it, like Castrol, but I'd definitely spend the little bit extra for fully synthetic.

What do you expect them to say? "Sorry you can't have this because you're a business and this is for regular customers only"? Seriously?
