How do new start-up companies go about designing, producing and manufacturing new phones? Is it very expensive? It's something ive been thinking about lately as there are many more smartphone manufacturers joining the market. Anyone have any info? Thanks

Other than mainstream brands like Samsung , HTC etc there are already loads of others already out there from the Chinese /Asian markets. Check out the Chinese android phone thread for examples.
Majority of people prefer big brands but more people are trying the cheaper lower alternatives nowadays which is good.

Yeah that's come to my realization lately, some Chinese android devices are actually surprisingly good build quality, at least for the price anyway! But i'm wondering how they start off/ establish their business. I'm assuming they wouldn't all have large amounts of money to be wasting on product research and development and the equipment to produce devices is hugely expensive.

I'd assume they hire factories which already make smartphones instead of getting their own equipment.

This is what Blu do: they're an American company that designs the phones and gets a Chinese company to build them before flogging them at low cost in the states.

The Vodafone own-brand series have moved between Alcatel/TCL (which weren't very good) and Yulong/Coolphone for the Smart 4 Turbo & Power (which I think are vast improvements), both of which are Chinese companies, and most start out in China: convenient in the world's largest smartphone market. They've got loads of manufacturers out there we haven't heard of and will probably sink into oblivion before we ever lay eyes on their stuff.

Gizchina is a good source for that stuff.
