Timing belt

    Hello,

I have a car that I drive sparingly (the other car is the main "hauler").

It's at 89400 km, docs say replace timing belt 90000 km, but dealer sticker on window says service 91000 km.

I need to get through a tight financial spot so I'd much rather replace at 91000 km.

How risky is it to hold off replacing for just a thousand km? I do know that a snapped timing belt means a very expensive engine rebuild, but how big would my risk be?

It's just over 1%, will be no problem once the cars age is not 7 or 8 years old where the belt will have degraded because of age and not use.

Since the belt isn't too old either as age has as big effect as mileage you'd be ok to go to 91k km. The 90k km interval is only a interval which is set on the safe side of things no one can judge exactly when a belt will snap.

Unless its French, belts snap within 1k of recommended change interval (ok its a joke, but based on evidence). I'd always do a PSA car early.

Edit, belts go brittle with age. If the change point is usually miles or years whichever it first. Take heed of both.

those limits are "usually" set quite conservatively, and even at that, it's not a part that will suddenly deteriorate at 90,000 kms... a few thousand either way will most likely be fine.

What's an average price to get one replaced?

Start new thread with your specific details, e.g. car brand and model, location etc.
