Brother Printer won't work with Windows 8.1 laptop

    I have a new lap-top and downloaded the relevant software from the Brother website.

    Unfortunately I cannot print- I am getting a not very helpful message that the "Printer is in an error state" I have tried downloading PaperPort, changing the USB connection, and uninstalling and reinstalling the printer driver software, all to no avail.

    I would welcome suggestions about how to deal with this problem.
