    Hi all,

I haven't done this for a few years now but the lack of available last minute (reasonably priced flights) means I'll be taking the rail sail option back to Dublin from Manchester on Sunday night.

Can anyone please recommend how is the cheapest way to obtain a rail sail ticket if there is a cheaper option ? by web in advance or at Piccadilly station in Manchester or is there a difference ?

    thanks in advance...

There's no difference as far as I'm aware. www.seat61.com is your best place for all rail travel queries

There are 2 levels of tickets.
The cheaper Sail Rail Advance is available up to 18.00 the day before travel but is quota controlled so may not always be available. For Manchester-Dublin Port it is £34 on regular ferries £44 on Swift fast ferry, the bus transfer to the city centre for Stena or Irish Ferries is additional €3

The Sail rail Standby ticket is about £5 more but can be bought right up to departure and is only limited by ferry space which is rarely an issue.

Both can be bought at any rail station (although minor stations may have difficulty issuing them) or online from some rail company websites, http://www.buytickets.arrivatrainswales.co.uk/ is one that is correctly set up to issue them, some others may not be.

All ticket are priced as singles so for a return you are effectively buying 2 singles. All tickets must be booked to a specific ferry crossing and Advance tickets also are booked to specific trains.

Fares are zonal so if your journey starts at a minor station near Manchester get it issued to start from there as it will be the same price and save you buying an additional ticket.

NOTE: with the bad weather this weekend the fast ferry services will be cancelled if they have not been already so don't book these.
