PunchesCross II: Last CX race of the season

In an effort to lengthen the CX season to what it's supposed to be, Sept-Feb, DCCX are running another CX race on Saturday 24th of January, again in Punchestown Racecourse.

From talking to people over the last few races, there are more now concentrating on CX and making it their main focus of the season. It seems as well that there was interest in a longer, fuller calendar, in particular with some racing after the Nationals in January. I myself always thought it was a shame to be, ideally, in your top form only to hang up the bike and eat the cake!

Would people be interested in the event? We're trying to get some feedback to justify it with numbers.

The feedback from the last race was good so the race will be in the same area of the racecourse but on a new and slightly longer course, with more poles and more tape! There will be an A and a B race, pending on numbers, with Juniors, Women and Vets.

As an added bonus, there will an end of season night out on the sauce on the Saturday night in the city, Dublin that is...

Pre Registration will be up over the next week or so. Also see FB link below for details.

    Swords on Sunday!!!

Sounds like a great idea.... and more races over the chrimbo holidays to keep people focused and off the sauce and mince pies.

    I'll be there.

Saturdays suit me better as well as have kids rugby on Sundays. Incidentally what so people think of Saturdays versus Sundays. I am involved in running the swords races and would suit me much better if we could do a few on Saturdays

Sundays suit me better. Would also like to see more races over Christmas. Can't do nationals, so tend to focus on the league races. That being said, a few relaxed races afterwards is good.

I would say those of us who aren't as focused on road or mountain bike racing would be up for more cross racing. The first MTB race is on the 1st Feb.

I guess though the Nationals which are on the 2nd weekend of the year will represent the pinnacle of the season for many, with anything afterwards perhaps a little less attractive.

One issue we've found in preparing for the Nationals this year is there has been a shift in emphasis in the local authority, meaning a test event that was planned between XMas and New Year simply could not take place. We're possibly goiing to need a bit of a re-think on what our course options are if we want to put on a programme of races in North Dublin going forward.

Having said that if we can get some positive publicity (and feedback) out of this weekend's event perhaps we can get a bit more co-operation from the Council (which has been forthcoming in the past) going forward

    Hi Folks

To be fair. Our council (Fingal) have been very accommodating in granting permission for the nationals.

As long as the correct application procedures were followed the council had no objections and were very supportive.

They have enabled cx to take place in swords since 2008 and I look forward to working with them next year.

40k, then race, and 40k back? Doesn't sound exactly like fun, to be honest.

Fair play for you though :)

8:30 sounds good for B race at 11:30, I'll be going slowly via N7 and then some straight back road from Rathcoole - the shortest route (30km).

I live near Portobello, we can surely meet somewhere.

It is a new course afaik.

1st lap of the B race:

Had to tie my shoe after the 1st run-up, on 2nd lap a large stick happily joined my rear wheel and my front tire burped massively when I fell on the very end of the last lap, had to run the last hill... Still I came 12th :)

Please spare comments about the start and my awful remounting, I am too well aware of this :pac:

I see from Strava that you 'commuted' down! Seriously impressive to do so on a bike with gearing/tyres for CX and you didn't spare the horse on the way home averaging 28km/h. You'll probably tell me that you went on the road bike with the CX bike slung across your shoulders!

Great quality footage. Don't know how yous do it - after one lap I'd have to go to bed for a month.

WA, do you have experience with a roadish bike with wide tyres? Its not that much different than on narrow slicks, especially if you pump them up. Normally I run 35mm kojaks and managed to score a KOM here and there :D

As for the way back, for most of the time I was drafting behind a bunch of UCD guys, this may explain the speed ;-) If you read this - thanks a lot again, I was truly knackered and had cramps in my calf... :pac:

We ride it :P I am pretty sure you'd do absolutely fine, looking at your strava for some time now:D

25mm is the widest I can recall (discounting what I rode as a child/teenager/student). I did try 28's on my audax bike but only for a short test spin. I would have assumed your CDF has 'knobbly' tyres for CX.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,520 ✭✭✭Alek

Yep, 33mm knobblies, pumped 50/60psi for the road (35/38psi for CX)

For the first lap you say, oh god I really want to stop. This is too hard. Why am I doing this? Next few laps are pretty similar. Then eventually you get past the half way point and refuse to quit.

Hahah, I thought it was only me :D My head is always looking for an excuse to withdraw during the first few laps, a little mechanical maybe, and then I realize there are only two left ;)

Well you can't use the " my shoe came undone" excuse again. You've used that one and we all saw it. : )
