Basically trying to think of places to go in early september for a week or so. Trying to think of someplace off the beaten track, not just the usual tenerife or spain experience! Croatia sticks out as a place i may consider, has anyone any advice on it?

In croatia, looking for a place thats reletivley cheap, not to many tourists where accomodation is cheap and maybe with a beach within walking distance of a small town with resturants and bars..

Anyone have any advice or insight into what ive described? thanks in advance ;D

ryanair fly to zadar not as touristy as dubrovnik and lower prices. ferrys available in old town to
many islands i would recommend silba and olib acommadation should be easy to get without pre booking in sept. so you could move between islands/mainland as you want

Aer Lingus fly to Pula in the Istrian peninsula (up north). Pula itself is an interesting town but I would highly recommend Rovinj, about 45 minutes away by bus.

A great place with an amazing old town (loads of winding little streets with hidden bars and restaurants) plus beaches within 15 mins walk of the town centre. You should be able to find accommodation near the beach or between the beach and the old town. Lots of options there.

Plus you can do a day trip to Venice if you want to get out a bit further!

I went there last October , Loved every second of it
We flew in to Dubrovnik and hired a car . Stayed 2 nights here then drove from there to Spilt along the coast road . Spectacular drive and would highly recommend this . We stayed in split then for 2 night , got a great deal in a hotel/resort just on the outskirts of Spilt. Stayed the final night in Zadar and flew back out of here.
Any questions regarding any of these places fire ahead and ask .

Highly recommend (off the top of my head here

    - Old town Dubrovnik
    - Cable car to top of mountain for sunset (old town area of Dubrovnik)
    - Costal drive from Dubrovnik to Spilt ( near a fulls days driving in this)
    - Day trip/overnight trip to the Islands in Spilt ..

Wasnt that long in Zadar to see a whole pile here but we had a nice walk around the city and went and seen the sea organ etc ..

it all depends , if your staying put in one city then I wouldn't think so.
Dubrovnik inst that big so you certainly wouldn't need it for here .
I'm not sure what public transport is like , I never needed to look into it.

Do you have any plan for your trip , where do you intend to visit ??

Croatia is beautiful. But a really beautiful country beside it, much more down to earth, less "touristy" and very unique is Montenegro. Couldn't recommend it highly enough, people very friendly, and much cheaper than Croatia.

    Great country, people and coffee!!!

We did a night on Pag - good food.
Then we went to Plitvice - amazing - go!
Went down to Split for a few days, did adventuring etc... Then went out to an island.

    Great country.

I was there around 3 years ago. We stayed in Stari Grad on Hvar for 2 weeks. Best place I've visited. Everything about it was great! Stayed in zadar for a night too was. The country is great. First thing I noticed there was the smell of lavender it's lovely haha.

Been to both Dubrovnik and Zadar. What surprised me if that's the term is how stunning beautiful the country is. I found the people in Zadar particularly friendly and it's cheaper then Dubrovnik but having said that more to do and see in Dubrovnik and it's probably the nicer of the two cities with great beaches. love the old town and the atmosphere, very safe also.

I found Dubrovnik was fairly pricey, pretty similar to home. Further north was much cheaper though, got some good meals in Pula and Rovinj for €10-20 (3 course) plus decent wine for €15-20.

Spent two weeks travelling up the coast last year and found that prices got cheaper as you moved north. A lot of the cruise ships stop in Dubrovnik and Split which causes the prices to be higher.

I would definitely recommend Croatia but it's not as off of the beaten track as you would assume. I met a lot of English and Europeans on my trip last , it's seen as a more laid back alternative to the south of France and Italy.

Dubrovnik is expensive and can get very crowded. Haven't been further north but seems better. Also many of the beaches are stony. Budva in Montenegro is a nice alternative. Not as many tourists and a lovely beach there. Kotor is also a nice place to stop off. I think both places were covered on last years series of Getaways.
