    Hi,

Just wondering is it possible to travel around Sri Lanka without booking accomodation in advance?
We're thinking it may be like Thailand where you can just gain accomodation when you stop in a certain town?

    Any help would be great
    Thanks

    Yup, totally possible.
We did 1000km around Sri Lanka (back in October) in a self drive jeep and didn't book anything :)

    It was really nice,
e.g. just stopped at a beach one day and there was a nice hotel, asked which rooms were available since we wanted the one directly on the beach facing the sea :)

You'll get a SIM Card with your Welcome back on Arrival, use this for 3g. You can use a mix of AirBNB and Kayak to find places to stay, Airbnb is quite nice as you stay with someone living locally.

In a lot of cases it was cheaper to pay when you turned up and didn't book and when driving yourself they were very open to negotiation since we weren't stuck there and could leave if we didn't like the place or the price :)

Yes it's easy enough, just be aware of festivals etc that can make finding accommodation difficult and expensive.

You get a welcome pack when you enter the country?!

There's a desk in the airport arrivals hall where you can buy a sim card, preloaded with some credit.

Yes, I got a tourist Dialog SIM Card and some other information stuff free from the guy at the immigration desk.

Never topped it up, just used up the 350rs Credit on it :pac:

the rate was 40$x11 days = 440$ total.
    Security refundable deposit = 300$.
80$ for 2 license stamped from AA Ceylon (IMO I don't think you really need this, just some made up Sri Lankan rubbish saying an international driving licenses isn't good enough)

We could have gone for a nice Air conditioned car for the same money but for the experience it was worth it. Wasn't like Hertz or anything where they check for scratches when you come back, my buddy even accidentally drove it into a ditch ... pretty rugged vehicle and was great for driving up through the mountains.
