    Hi

I heard herself on about taxback.com for a "tax refund" and she sent them a text and then they rang her saying to fill out a form etc.

I was kinda saying to her why are you getting them to do it, can it not be done yourself. ( Just a PAYE worker )

Question is, how do you this yourself ?
Do you have to go download a specific form from revenue and then send it in.

Or is it in fact easier to go the taxback.com route ?

Taxback basically prey on people's ignorance. For a basic P21 review of last year you only need send in you and your wife's P60s to your local Revenue office when you get them from your respective jobs and stick a note with it asking for a review of your tax paid in the year.

If you have other credits to claim it should be straightforward anyway, have a look on Revenue's website and if your unsure of anything give them a call. Be prepared to wait on the line a while though at this time of year.

ok, thanks, so it should simply be just a matter of ringing the local tax office and ask them to to an audit of your taxes

No. In fact I would go so far as to say never ring the tax office and mention the word audit under any circumstances!

Just follow the steps I posted above, they won't be able to do anything for you over the phone without copies of your P60s at this time of year.

OP I use Revenue's PAYE online service. I just input my P60 details on their system, I enter in the total of my medical expenses for the year and request a P21 statement. I usually get about €50 back in tax due to tax relief on medical expenses and that's it. I can also review my tax credits cert online and make any changes. I think the system is ok to use.

OP if you cant follow the forms online and it confuses you. You can go to a Revenue office. The Dublin city one is off O Connell St. Its not the most pleasant experience. But if you are there early in the day, there is no queues and the staff are super helpful

Never pay Taxback.ie for anything you can do yourself. The take a % of what you are due. If you are both PAYE workers wait until you get your P60's if you have not already received them. In the meantime both of you register for PAYE Anytime on the revenue.ie site. Then once you have the P60's log-in and click on the 2014 tab and request a P21 balancing statement - if you have any credits or things to claim for over and above the normal then these can be added in here too e.g. medical expenses, certain dental expenses etc. Then click submit and about 2-3 days later you should have received your balancing payment if entitled to one, you can go back up to four years so make sure you do that if you think you are due anything.

Failing that or if you are not very au-fait with the PAYE Anytime system then either visit the tax office in person or send an email giving both your PPS numbers and asking for a 2014 balancing statement to be issued (note do not mention audit in your correspondence :-)) Email details for the relevant office can be found on the Revenue site contact locator by typing in your PPS number. Also not sure if you are married but if so you should advise them of that as any unused credits can be shared between spouses.

Thanks for that, we already have a login to PAYE anytime.

for TAB 2014. I see for myself I have

    PAYE tax credit : 1650
    Personal tax credit : 1650
    Rent tax credit : 800
    Medical insurance relief: 1000

But then in tab TAB OVERVIEW , I clicked "latest tax credits certificate "............which is for 2015. (this opened up in a separate adobe window for some reason )

    Personal Tax Credit 1,650.00
    PAYE Tax Credit 1,650.00
    Rent Tax Credit 120.00
    Medical Insurance Relief 200.00

Strange the way the rent tax credit and medical insurance relief has dropped so much. I have the exact same health insurance as last year again this year

    EDIT

I have now clicked on the TAB 2015 and see this

    Personal Tax Credit 1,650.00
    PAYE Tax Credit 1,650.00
    Rent Tax Credit 600.00
    Medical Insurance Relief 1000.00

so the information in the 2015 tax credit tab differs from the 2015 "latest tax credits certificate"

Its the same. The rent tax credit is 20% of 600 this year. It will be less next year as the its been phased out. The medical insurance relief is also 20% of 1000.

Thanks. Where is this 20% figure got from. Is it just a figure that applies to everyone ?

Yes. The bulk of reliefs are the standard rate of tax, 20%.

Where is the figure of 1000 coming from for the medical insurance relief, it seems a very round figure and my medial insurance costs more than this.
