Replacing Open Gas Fire With An Inset Stove - What Type ???

We have an open gas fire (non-boiler) in our 13sqm living room, sofa is about 3m away from the fire.

We want to replace it with (a low output) recessed cassette / inset gas or multi-fuel type stove.
Must be low output as we don't want to melt the skin off ourselves !!!

Don't know the first thing about fireplaces etc and would welcome your advice.
Can the firebox / firepit be raised off the floor - maybe up a foot off the floor??
(Thanks to wikipedia for the firebox / firepit definition !!!)

    Are prices cheaper up north??
