Upgrade Advice

Hi All, I'd like some advice on upgrading this 5 year old pc. I'd like to get it into a state where my son can use it to do some PC gaming, nothing too heavy.

    Here are the current specs:

AMD Phenom II X4 '920' 2.80GHz Quad Core

    Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3

    4GB RAM Kingston DDR2 1066Mhz

    Mainboard ASUS AM2+ M3A78-VM

    600 Watt | ARCTIC cooler

I'd like to upgrade the RAM to 8GB and get a newer GPU but I'm not sure if it'll support 8GB of RAM and I don't know which would be the best GPU to get? I've done a bit of googling but I'm none the wiser, any advice would be appreciated.

Edit: I'm looking at adding another 2X2GB DDR2 memory and the Nvidia GTX 750ti, would this work?
