    Hey lads.

I haven’t really used this forum before but I regularly read the education boards and I’ve seen you guys give lots of people helpful advice, so I was wondering, if you have the time, could you answer some questions I have about third level FETAC links? So far I’ve completed a FETAC LV5 in Security Studies and I am in the middle of a FETAC LV6 in Security Operations. I got distinctions in everything bar one module in LV5 and I’m optimistic about how well I’m doing in LV6 at the moment.

However, I'm not really sure what my third level options are. The only reliable information I’ve gotten is from putting my LV5 Award code into Careers portal:

    http://www.careersportal.ie/courses/cao_fetac_links.php?fetac_code=5M2110&Button_DoSearch=Search#.VKvtY9KsVe8

I looked at the UCC FETAC links book and it matches what career portal says, I’ve also looked into UL’s FETAC links but they don’t seem to offer a course for either award. So my first question is, are these all my options based on the FETAC Award I have? I’d be happy to do an arts orientated course if that’s all that was available (particularly Criminology) but I don’t want to lose out on any opportunities that I might not be aware of.

My 2nd question is about FETAC modules. I was talking to one of my tutors about the CAO, and he mentioned that if I went and talked to the Student admissions office in UCC/ UL that some of the modules that I completed in FETAC LV5/6 might make me eligible to join a course in 2nd year. I’m not really sure what he meant, and it’s the first time that I’ve heard of such a thing, have you heard of anything like this? Would doing criminology at FETAC lv5 make me eligible to join 2nd year Criminology in UCC for example?

Thanks for your time and hopefully you can help me out.

Joining the second year of a course in a university with a FETAC award is not possible as far as I know. You could give them a ring to check, but I believe the only way be accepted into a University with a FETAC award is by having the exact award they ask for, with the required modules completed, and having obtained a certain no of distinctions.

You can however enter the second of a course in an Institute of Technology with a Level 6 provided the course you are entering is relevant to the FETAC qualification you have. You would have to contact the IoT individually for this.

For any course you have an interest it is best if you ring the University or Institution as then you will be sure you have a definitive answer.

Just on a quick search I found this, if it would be of any interest to you..

Thanks for responding PLL, you've actually cleared up a lot of what I wondering about.

I have looked into the advanced entry option and it appears that you are correct in that it mostly applies to very specific courses (doesn't appear that Criminology is one though)

Those are some interesting courses you've listed as well, I had never thought about WIT.

    Cheers for the info.
