I've had sky for about 5 years the dish is on the chimney of the house. Recently it fell off and whole new dish had to be put up. Now with the Bad weather today the signal has gone again I presume the dish needs to be realigned as all cables behind box are fine. It was only two weeks ago when I paid 170 to the installer. I told him to put a strong arm on it but I presume he hasn't is there a something I can buy to stop the dish moving in bad weather? Also when he put the new dish on the channels upstairs didn't work it was only a few weeks ago I shouldn't be charged again?

I personally thinks its bad practice for any installer to place a dish on a chimney. Give him a call again and sk for the dish to e place in a more secure position and tell him you aint paying. Did he do a re run of cables or anymore than putting up a dish as paying 170 for some one to put up a dish is daylight robbery.

€170 for a new dish dear god just to replace a dish...I get complained at when I try and charge €100, if it was only was fitted 2 weeks ago it should be covered...

Moving a dish would be more expensive as the cables would need to be re-run or joined somewhere if longer runs were needed.

No he never done any new cables just removed the dish and put a new one on!

It wasn't sky but a local well known company that's why I didn't mind paying as I thought it would be done right.
Never had any real problems with it being on the chimney before? Just think the dish would look out of place on front of house as we would be the only house on the road to do that

I got asked by my brothers girlfriends sister (i know its complicated :D) how much for me to put up an aerial and do a cable run for them, I told them seen as they are in some way connected to my brother that id do it for them for 70euro, So i would have to drive over 40km to get to them id then have my time and of course the equipment they said that was too dear.........some people wants things for nothing.

My God that is robbery. I see alot of chimneys with dishes attached and I think its not a good idea that a chimney has something attached that the wind can blow around and possibly cause some serious damage to the chimney in high winds. I know having them on the front of the house is not visually appeasing but its better than running the risk of the chimney being damaged.

Me too you'd be lucky to get the 100 off some people.

Prime example of a job I got rung about since I first wrote on this post earlier, how much to align a dish on the front of a house that is causing problems, 15 miles from me each way on a secondary road about 25 mins drive in each direction so 30miles in total. Quoted €40. told i was a robber down the phone and was offered 30euro ....I declined the work....

People dont see the work/travel/time thats involved, all they think is involved is the movement of a dish by someone and thats it.

I remember being charged a lot of money back in the 90s to install a TV3 aerial (I provided the aerial), decided back then to do my own in future, probably saved into the thousands of euro since then installing dishes/aerials/cabling for family/friends thanks to that greedy installer.

No harm in him troubleshooting as long as their is no charge. All it takes for a signal to go missing is a slight mis alignment of the dish but in saying that its strange that its back on now if the dish had moved.

Another option would be to use a swan neck bracket and place the dish at the back of the house. Much less prone to wind damage then. I agree with earlier poster chimney mounts are not the best place for a dish.

can't as he said i won't get a reception out the back cause of trees

The dish will still face the same direction so I'm a little dubious as to his claim about trees since the dish would be further back from them and have even more clearance even taking into account the drop in height. Are the trees taller than your house in the direction of the dish ? Take a look at dishpointer.com enter your address and the astra 2 satellite and it will show you any obstructions.

Edit: just thinking further on this, are the trees to the front or the back of your house ?

My pleasure hope you get sorted .

Edit: if you have a smart phone download the dishpointer app, then you can stand at the back of your house and see if you have clear sky to the satellite.

Weather is bad now sky has gone again!! Anyone know what's going on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,341 ✭✭✭✭Tony

When it rains the received signal level drops so I'd suspect the dish is not aligned correctly.

Thats dreadful behaviour by the installer and didnt you mention that it was a reputable company......At this stage you might be better getting your cat or dog to do it :D
