Laptop screen flickered then dimmed to black

I've an Acer Aspire 5930g, that's about 5/6 years old.
Screen started flickering occasionally during the week, then at the weekend slowly kept dimming until it gradually went black (seemed to spread out from one corner).

Haven't had a chance to check it with an external monitor yet, but it looked more like a screen issue than a gfx card problem.

Wondering what the problem is likely to be, and how expensive to fix. I'd be happy to take a stab at it myself if it's not that messy.

From the sticker on the machine, the display is 15.4" WXGA Acer CrystalBrite LCS (8ms / 220-nit)"

Screen inverter is what first popped into my head reading your post...

Whether or not it's cost effective to fix or not however....

Cheers for that. Got it working with a spare monitor so it's definitely a screen issue, from reading a bit more sounds like inverter or backlight. I gather the inverter will be easier and possibly cheaper to fix, so might try that if I can pick one up cheap.

Worth a shot provided the parts are cheap. But 5/6 years is good going for a laptop, it doesn't owe you much at this stage!

It's probably the inverter as Alan suggested

You've nothing to lose, the laptop is worth very little. And the good news is that inverters are generally not expensive. Probably get one from ebay for around €15-€20 including shipping. It's not a hard job, inverters just click in typically.

Getting access to it is trickier. You might find a guide on youtube about someone opening your laptop or one similar to it. Don't buy the part yet as the hardest bit is ordering the right part :)

If you can get the part out, then you can be confident you will order the right part and put it back together again

Good luck and keep us posted!

If you can't do it yourself, a pro would charge about €50 for it. A shop could charge considerably more.
