Puncture on edge of tyre

    Hi all,

A nail was embedded at the part of my tyre where the tread meets the side wall if that makes sense... Something like this but slightly more on the tread side. Brought it to a reputable repair place and the guy fixed it no bother.

Reading another thread someone said that a puncture on or near the sidewall is not repairable and the tyre should be replaced. It's a serious hazard to repair such punctures.

Is there a general consensus on this? I'm a bit wary of driving on that wheel now but I'm thinking that the repair place wouldn't have fixed it if it was dangerous. I've driven about 200 miles on it since and the tyre pressure is still stable. I'd normally change the tyre if there was any doubt but the kicker is that these tyres are practically brand new so I'd like to get a bit more time out of them if there's no risk.

In the absence of any relevant EU or Irish guidelines reputable tyre fitters should adhere to British Standard BS AU 159 for puncture repairs. Here is some more information from AXA. If your puncture was outside the marked area in those links (as in the pic that you linked) then it should not have been repaired.

That's very informative thanks. Looks like I'll have to replace the tyre so. I do a lot of motorway driving so definitely not worth risking it for the sake of a hundred quid.
