im starting to look for my wedding dress soon but I've nowhere to go. I absolutely do not want a white or Ivory dress but I do want a proper special wedding dress. I've been looking online to get ideas on where to go but everything is just so white. Can anyone help me? I'm on a budget as well so nothing too upmarket!

f you want something in colour, just look up evening gowns or full length dresses. I know someone who wore a beautiful green full length dress for her wedding. It is lovely to see something different!

Hi Kim congrats to you... As above tis nearly true.. I am the same I went to two bridal shops and was like how in the name of god am I suppose to carry this haha and they just weren't for me...

I have been looking at ones on JJ's house but I am not sure what would suit.. Think if you look at more boutique places or just regular fancy shops.. Where are you based

I was the same as you - definitely didnt want something white & was on a budget! I ended up having my made & it cost less than half of anything I had tried on & it was my dream dress :)

Joanne Fleming has a few blue and gold dresses. Check her out. Some small designers will make up a dress in your chosen colour also.

Ive had a look at Joanne Flemming, her stuff is amazing but I think getting one made or travelling over to her studio would be out of my budget. But I might try Vintage Bride in Dublin as they stock some of her dresses.

Ive also had a look at just evening wear, but none of them feel very "wedding" to me

If you're on a tight budget I'd recommend having a look in the January Sales in Coast, Brown Thomas, Marks and Spencer and Pamela Scott. I passed by Pamela Scott on Grafton Street and they had a few rails of evening dresses on sale.

Have a look at Catherine Deane as well, her regular as well as bridal collections. Also the lovemydress blog has links to some Fab dress designers.

Memories on Parliament St -without a doubt they are amazing

My dress was still weddingy but not a typical wedding dress

    Good luck!

Frock 'n' Fabulous have some showstopping gowns for rent if that option interests you.

One fab day do features on the designers mostly stocked in Ireland they tend to be less weddingy. Catherine Deane did a line with bhldn which is more affordable. I love bhldn stuff though so am bias

Yes I would be interested in blush or gold, I want something that really feels bridal but has some warmth to it in terms of colour because I'm so fair skinned and I never ever wear white or even cream

Im really really pale but I didnt think that white or ivory would look bad on me but my god every ivory dress I tried on made me look awful! The white dresses looked great on me though, have you tried white dresses on? Would it be possible for you to get a white one dyed another colour? Ive seen it done on tv but I dont know anyone who has done it in real life.

I saw an absolutely beautiful dress in Cork, in a coffee colour, with antique gold-coloured ribbon on the waist . It was in a bridal shop just outside Cork city, but they do slightly more unusual stuff. Ivory Rose is the name of the place.

It was like this one... but in a much darker colour

Wow that's interesting, I find pale clothes like whites and creams always look awful on me. But I will give it a try for the dress. I am booked in for my first apt this week to look at dresses so I will be trying white to get an idea of style. Who knows, I might get a surprise myself.

I hadn't considered dying a dress. I am thinking of getting one made though if I find a style and a fabric I like

The thing is that there are so many subtle shades. Mine is champange - darker than cream really, but it really suited me. As someone who is paler than the palest shade of any foundation, you really should try on a few - I did with every shade from coffee to blue via white, and its great for giving you a good idea of what suits you or not. And try on a few expensive dresses to for the craic too. When will you ever get to twirl in a 10k dress again? ;)

I dont know any place who professionally dyes dresses. The problem is that different elements of the dress are different fabric blends and possibly will absorb the dyes to a different depth - eg, polyester (most sewing thread) wont take colour at all, yet silk will. So it makes the seams more noticible.

Seems white doesn't suit a lot of people - including me! I have yellow skin tones, so white always looks as though it's in need of a good wash!

Alfred Angelo do some bridal and BM dresses in colour, and the prices aren't too bad either.

Wai Ching is a designer based in Seattle who makes fabulous coloured/textured bridal dresses. Wanted to get one for my own wedding but the budget didn't allow for it :p

Kaki, those are amazing! Not bad being under the €1000 mark either, for silk.

Definitely, some of the more form-fitting ones come in around €750 (plus shipping/import duty). When doing my research back in 2013 I didn't come across anything similar in that price range in Ireland/the EU.

I dream of wearing one to renew our vows in the future (once/if we manage to navigate our education upskilling, career-starting and bubs) :o

It may be worth your while ensuring the bridal shops have colours in stick other than ivory before you go though.
In all the dresses I tried on, there was only one that was white. However, I did try a dress in Jeutonic in Kilkenny, it was an Essense of Australia one, that was an oyster colour, it was a gorgeous colour. It came second to the dress I chose. I just went to their site to try and find it but this one popped up straight away, which could be !lovely

Am really loving all the advice and sites to check out. I tried some on during the week and they were awful on me, both white and Ivory just made me look so pale and the dresses just didn't suit me. Will definitely be looking for something alternative...something not quite as heavy as the typical wedding dress lol.

Just something to consider, are you planning on having a spray tan for the wedding?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,992 ✭✭✭✭fits

Kim, As far as I know Sabina Motasem and house of mooshki will both make a custom colour if you like their styles. Sabina is very approachable and I think she is coming to her stockist shop in Drogheda in February. I would say any of the smaller designers will accommodate you if you want a different colour. Also check out bridesmaid ranges. Ghost dye to order is another to consider. They have a range of gowns you can get in a wide variety of colours.
