Distributor help - Nissan Primera P11 (possible mechanic recommendation?)

I have owned my Nissan Primera P11 for 7 years and I have done all the work on it since I bought it.

But I am stuck working on my distributor at the moment. I have had it diagnosed by two different mechanics and have bought the replacement part for it secondhand.

I have got to the point, where the engine turned over briefly about 1 minute, but the engine didn't "sing the right tune"....i.e. - the timing is off. I have tried readjusting the placement and the rotor, but I can't get it to turn over again.

I have looked up the procedure for finding TDC(Top Dead Center) but am honestly at this point frustrated with it. My brother-in-law in the states, has also walked me through it over the phone but as he said finding TDC is "grown man (four letter word for excrement)".

My question is does anyone have any helpful hints for finding TDC or alternatively any mechanic recommendations for me?
