My htpc's mobo or cpu ( id' say mobo ) just bit the dust after 8 years so it's time for an upgrade - just after xmas when I'm skint. Fab.

I know nothing about the latest processors ( coming for a core 2 duo ) so I just need to know....Is there really much difference in performance between the 1st to the 4th generation i7's. Anyone ever get stung buying a second hand cpu?

Looking at ebay I think I can pick up a 1st gen for €60 odd. Or should I get a 2nd gen as a minimum ?

Could stick it in something like this:

Would be fairly descent enough system wouldn't it ?

For a htpc an i7 is absolute over kill, an i3 will be more than capable of doing the job.

I defo wouldnt bother with 1st gen anyway as socket 1156 is pretty much redundant these days. You will also be hard pushed to pick up a motherboard anywhere at a reasonable price as they're quite rare.

2nd/3rd gen, is fine. Can be got cheap enough, but I'd be looking to futureproof myself and go for 1150.

Should be able pick up a motherboard i3 combo for €120ish used, I wouldn't hesitate buying from eBay so long as the seller has good feed back over a decent period of time selling similar goods. Would also be covered by PayPal if it was goosed.

Sorry I should have said I don't just use it as a HTPC. I want it to be as fast as poss when I need it to be for whatever reason. I do like to play games on it from time to time but that can wait till I get a new graphics card. I think i'll focus on getting the 1150 socket as you suggest.

Okay I've educated myself a little and see that yes indeed your right, the i7 would still be overkill. I just though an i7 would be an no-brainer where building a desktop is concerned. I didn't even know the i5's were quads so yeah the one's you've suggested would satisfy my need for speed. I haven't read up on these things since I built my PC back in 2007 !

I really like your suggestion as well going with the G3258 to start with. Would this constitute a good z97 to you ?

It's bloody cheap and a huge upgrade over what I had even with the G3258 !
