Extending Wireless range

I have been asked to look at a friends wireless setup in their house.

Currently they have a Netgear WRG614 Router (B/G only), it covers most of the house but they want it to extend to an outside Garage and get better signal insude the house.

The router is placed at the end of the house near the garage, but the garage is on a different electricial circut so homeplugs won't solve it.

My initial thoughts were to just upgrade the router to one with N wireless, or possibly an extender that had N, but not sure how that would work if the router didn't support N...

Budget would be about 50 quid.
