hi folks, totally clueless about all this stuff so im looking for advice from the experts, currently I've a TV with saorview built in using an indoor ariel to boost signal in the apartment but I'm looking at getting a combi box with the free view channels in the next week or 2 and wondering is it possible to use one of these without a satellite dish
    any advice would be great
    cheers

A combi box needs both a satellite dish and aerial

no, combi means the box will receive both terrestial channels and satellite channels. Satellite needs a dish. The box will have 2 tuners.

If you are near the border its possible to pick up saorview and freeivew but you will need a good aerial. ie your tv could pick up both.

Freeview is the UK digital terrestial television = DTT.. terrestial needs aerial. saorview is the irish DTT saor = free.

FREESAT is the UK free to air channels and the giveaway is SAT = satellite ie you need a dish and a freesat receiver.

    hope this helps

Maybe I am missing something but IF you already have a TV with Saorview built in, there is no advantage in you getting a combi box. You can already receive the terrestrial channels from your aerial on your tv. What you need is just a satellite box with a single sat tuner if you just want to be able to receive the free satellite channels.

What about recording Saorview? Even if the TV itself can do it, the box gives you another tuner, so you have the full choice of channels available to watch while a recording is being made.

think poster has neither so in living in apartment is it wired for cable -upc or sat feed via 28.2 hopefully ,or nothing wired into the wall plates.

That's a point, but the OP never mentioned recording and if that's a consideration they could look at a combi box with a dual sat tuner to give the full choice of watching as you record.

Sorry a few details: we're in an old apartment that has an old ntl connection there's no communal dish etc, not sure if we'll be staying any later than july/August so I'd prefer not to have to get a permanent dish & I would prefer a hd box with the option to record ,I'm thinkin though It's lookin like I'll need a dish

Yea, a sat box or combi box will be useless without a dish.

pity you dont have a friendly neighbour with a free lnb not too far away you could borrow a sat feed from and when leaving
give them back the cable.then you have freesat and use an indoor aerial for saorview.

NEVER do this ( for reasons of electrical safety)

This is much over hyped. The theory is that with different phases you could get 415 volts between the neighbour's cable and your mains supply. But you would need a fault both at your neighbours and your own premises.

You could do this quite safely by making sure your neighbours satellite cable is earthed where it enters your property.

Its against electrical safety regulations which are there for good reason and would invalidate and public liability insurance the installer holds if he knowingly did this.

    End of in my view

Could you actually quote the actual reg it is against?

Would serve no purpose other than to take the thread further off topic. If you wanted to start another thread just on that issue then by all means.

    So, no you can't then.

Cable companies feed multiple households and use isolators.
MATV systems feed multiple households and earth bond everything.

So presumably it is not against the regulations.

If the correct precautions are taken it is perfectly safe, and I explained that he needs to earth the cable as it enters his property.

Not so, I just see no purpose in arguing with you on something that does nothing for the thread. If you feel that strongly then start a new thread on the subject and i'd be happy to debate with you.

Seems rather expensive for a temporary setup. Dishes are cheap enough on eBay.

ah you were expecting an instantaneous response ? you posted this 22 mins after you started the thread . A little patience is not unreasonable I think. I look at boards when time allows
