See ads for barley, oats for sale in 1/2 tonne bags. Silly question but seeing as farmers probably don't have scales etc, does exactly 1/2 a tonne of barley fit into these bags ? How do you know how much your getting. I saw one ad saying that only 1/3 tonne grain fits into a bag . These bags could have been originally designed to hold sand. I'm interested in buying a tonne or two.

If you're collecting they can weigh you on the way in and out

Fair enough, makes things easier. I didn't think the average tillage guy would have a weigh bridge. Having said that , I know very little about tillage.:)

Depends on the grain in a particular year. I get 1tonne bags of rolled barley from local coop on occasion. A1 tonne bag full to the brim holds just over a tonne usually (4×4& 5ft high bag) In 2012-13 a taller bag(close to 6ft high) was holding less than a tonne. Grain was like grass seed and all shell. Poor quality but still charged full price.

Was thinking about getting a tonne or two from dd. in general would there be huge variations in quality of grain ? I've only ever bought from mills up to now for sheep fattening.

You can get a 4ft square weigh bridge with a digital clock that weighs up to 3 ton, not that expensive so the guys selling the grain probably have one of those
